I know one way is the movement of the seconds hand on the watch...only I can't remember which way indicates it is real...a smooth motion of the hand or a definite ticking/stopping motion of the hand.

Some ways to check for a fake:
1.Use a loop and examine the small type printing on the face of the watch. On the really cheap fakes the lettering breaks up and is not crisp. If the small print is not crystal clear, its usually fake. Also check and make sure all of the words are spelled correctly.
2.Check the back for serial numbers stamped into the back casing. Many fakes do not have this.
3. Check the weight. Cheap fakes tend to be lighter than the real thing.
4. Are there any rough edges anywhere on the watch? This is sometimes a tip off that something is not right. A real one will not have anything on it that would catch the skin on your arm unless damaged.

Real rolexes have serial number behind where the band connects with the case. You may have to take the band loose to see it.

if a rolex happenes to a gold model a simple check to see if the gold is real is a good starting point. if the case and the watch where the band connects have serial numbers and thet match that is a goood sign. most rolexs [gmt; submariner presidential sre mechanical movements and the second hand moves in little jumps on a real one where as a fake could have a quartz movement and the sercond hand would move steady. bobby
