I hope someone can help me figure this one out. I have never before listed in the marketplace at Amazon but it seemed a good deal, so today I listed several books. When I checked my email it said the books were listed for 60 days and if a book sold I would be charged the normal 15%, then it stated there would also be a .99 cent closing fee. Is this new? I have looked and looked but I can't find anywhere on Amazon where there is a closing fee charged. Will I be charged the closing fee even if the book doesn't sell? I thought the book was listed until it sold, not only 60 days. Please clue me in.

This is not new. If you do not have a promerchant account, you pay .99 plus 15% plus Amazon charges the customer $3.49 for shipping and you only get $2.23. If you sell over 40 books a month if would pay to become a Promerchant for $39.99. You also never have to relist. You only pay this if the book or item sells

Thanks for the info. I went back and read the help and learned that you are right. I am unhappy with the situation and don't think I could ever sell 40 books a month. Maybe if I only sold books I could do it, but I sell more collectibles. Think I will stay with half.com.

Homesteade you dont need to sell 40 books. the merchant account covers auctions, z-shops and marketplace. You can sell anything you want not JUST books. Browse some of your collectible catagories in z-shops (fixed price) or auctions. It still may be worth your while

Yes you can sell anything. You can list 40,000 Zshops and unlimited Marketplace and Auctions. But if you check the Amazon Seller Message Board, you will find the most volume on Marketplace. Books, Videos, CDs and DVD. When I did auctions/zshops I sold 25 a week, now I do 25 or more a day. I did not just sell books then, I sold Antiques also with largest purchase was $12,000 for a antique rolltop desk. My biggest day was 59 items and that was last January not at Christmas time. Auctions are not be promoted and even the most sucessfull auction sellers are suffering due to the lack of promotion. When everything works at Amazon, I sell 200 items a week. Lately it has been very slow

i beleive they have changed the number of days of items on marketplace from 30 to 14 days.
unless you have a promerchant account, you have to relist the books after 14 days.
40,000 items is a lot of items for 39.99,it is hard to keep track of what is still available as many sellers sell in more than one venue

Actually it's just the opposite! They have increased the number of days from 30 to 60. Copied from my last listing confirmation a couple of days ago:
"Thank you for listing your item at Amazon.com. Your listing should appear
in the regular Amazon.com catalog within one day, and will remain listed
until it is purchased or for 60 days, whichever comes first."

what is a closing fee?
the 99 cents fee is called a transaction fee and is charged when a book is sold, not when the book ends its listing for 60 days.
what is the latest-30 days 14 days or 60days.
you would think with so many books, amzn wants to shorten the days

WOWOW85:
Per the Help page at Amazon....
Amazon.com collects a fee only when your item sells. At that time, Amazon.com collects your sales price from your buyer, deducts a commission of $0.99 plus 15% of the sales price, and deposits the rest in your account. (Note: Pro Merchant Subscribers don't pay the $0.99 commission.) We even add an additional shipping credit to help cover your shipping costs
John lists a used, hardcover copy of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Say the current Amazon.com price is $16.00. Because John's copy is in great condition, he sets his price at the maximum permitted--10% off of $16.00, or $14.40. When John's item sells, Amazon.com collects a commission of 15% plus $0.99 (the latter of which would be waived if John were a Pro Merchant Subscriber)--or $2.16. John's earnings on the sale are $11.25.
Now here's the best part: John is also credited money for shipping. Because John's buyer is in the U.S., the shipping credit for selling a book is $2.23. This is added to his earnings, and the entire amount is deposited in John's account. John's grand total, including shipping credit, comes to $13.48.
---------
Note the shipping credit- Amazon does keep some of this money. They call that the transaction fee

LOL! I love how Amazon makes it sound like they're doing you a favor by giving you $2.23 for shipping, while not mentioning the fact that they charge the customer $3.49. They have their grubby paws in every pocket.
