thanks for the lead....it does look good.
What i didn't see was testimonials, or sample sites....
please keep us posted with your experiences...

i guess being burned by Paypal and eBay and eBud...etc...makes me a little more cautious....

"SOUNDS" good - of course that is qualified, because one can never tell - I have checked out a couple of this type site, and when I began questioning them, I found some of the "hidden" catches.

I have 4 ISP accounts and 2 web site accounts so actually have no need of such a service, but thought I might indulge, "IF" the terms were all that I was initially seeing. Each time I delved deeper, with questions, either the answers were not exactly as the site appeared, or I never heard from the site again.

My main concern about any such site is stability - and experience.

It does sound good, and I'll check it out. Thanks for the info.

I just went and checked out the site - must say their "CartWizard" demo is a hoot! I have written them with questions, will let you know what type of response I get.

Well, as I mentioned, I heard about this from a friend who is a happy customer, so I guess that counts as a testimonial. I registered on Friday, and by Saturday morning my domain name had been officially registered with InterNIC and I was ready to go [they actually gave me my IP Address immediately, but I needed the domain name to set up e-mail accounts]. I have since consolidated most of my various web sites onto this server and haven't had a problem with anything yet.

I probably won't be using the shopping cart or merchant account features, so I can't evaluate them. But everything else looks great to me. They have a section on their home page that explains what servers and connections they have, and the techies at my company I spoke to told me it sounds like these folks have a very good setup.

I just can't figure out how they make any money on the deal, and that does worry me a bit. In the meantime, though, I am now the proud owner and sole proprietor of....

Thanks, Barry. This looks like a great site. Your site looks great .... got a few chuckles from it.

thepriest, I have one more to add to your list. I had a free shopping cart .... it's no longer free. Therefore, I was in the midst of looking for something affordable out there. Will it ever end??

Bill,

Not a problem, just a technical violation which can be easily remedied. Udder?

Barry,

My email to you bounced. You can mention the name of the site, but please edit out the link to the site, as well as the list of specific services it provides.

Pat: I'm afraid I didn't get your e-mail. Would you mind resending it? I just changed my e-mail in my account preferences, so maybe it got lost in the shuffle or something.

[edited to add: Just saw your post. I will go and eviscerate my original post so as to render it useless as per your mandate]

thepriest: Well, the site I linked to is my personal web site that I have spent years and years developing, and it did require a lot of HTML and Javascript. I have actually had the site for 5 years at my old ISP and simply moved it over to this new ISP when I signed up.

Well, it seems the reason Pat's e-mail to me bounced is because of a server glitch at the very ISP I am currently "promoting". Fortunately, I was able to call their technical support and talk to a real human being [picked up on the first ring, even!], and the problem was immediately resolved.

Perfection would be nice, but I'll settle for good service....

Never trust a hosting company till you have been a member for at least 3 months. I have changed hosts about 200 times (really) since 94. There are too many bad companies out there. I have noticed after about 3 months you start realizing the problems. The last one I had did not work with ANY cgi scripts and they blamed it on me. I could not even get a damn mailto form to work!

I contacted "Fat Cow," and was pleased at the rapid response I received. I asked them if I could use the cart system, secure server, but not the credit card processing system, since I have my own merchant account, and they replied immediate that I could.

I was impressed with their clear, concise, rapid response.

moparmaniac: I'm sorry, but are you saying that you have just signed up with Fat Cow, or are you promoting your own web hosting services? If the latter, that is DEFINITELY a no-no around here. I only slid by because I'm not actually affiliated with the service I mentioned....

Hi Barry....thanks for the great info. Went there and am in the process of checking it out word for word. This is something we have been wanting to do for some time but the choices of sites etc have been dizzying and we ended up giving up on it. We currently have a website on a freebie but it does not include a domain name.....etc. Hope this is ends up being a good lead. Please Keep us posted on how it goes......Pam

minx47: Well, if you find any hidden "catch" buried in the text somewhere, please let me know. I'm a confirmed cynic and strongly believe in the maxim "if it looks too good to be true, it probably is." But I just can't find anything wrong with this deal, at least not from my viewpoint.

One of my co-workers who has a side job building e-commerce sites feels that the "shopping cart wizard" doesn't offer enough flexibility for a high-end company, but that it looks fine for a small business. Also, I did notice that there is a limit of 5GB [5000MB] of transfers per month before incurring extra fees, but that seems like a LOT of transfers to me [and the extra fees aren't that much]. Other than that, though, I just haven't found any potential problems.

Regards,

Barry

Barry, can't find one either...so far....and frankly....the fact that you posted this was one reason I took it seriously..... because I have read your posts both here and on the ebay boards for some time now and have found you to be direct, informative and say it like it is which is what I like.........and that ain't no bull....honest..........So we will probably give it a go and see how it goes. I don't think the shopping cart fits our needs as we do not have too many in stock items, almost all , but books are custom orders so I am still exploring ways to take credit cards thru the laptop at trade shows...But this is a start....Pam

Barry - not sure if anyone alse has pointed out already, but I think there is a 1,000 limit on items in the store. I seem to have read it somewhere when perusing the site.

Does anyone have access to the financials of this company and how financially stable they are? The $99 is not the problem but the work to set up everything is. Hate to do all the work and then find they went under.

Okay, I took the advice here and setup a new website with fatcow.com.

Excellent service I must say, and I am not affliated with them at all. I sent tech support 3-mails and got responses within an hour.

Their control panel is basic and clean. Nothing fancy but it works. Their e-mail setup is a little archaic, but it works well once you get the jist down.

Overall, I would say a good thumbs up. You really can't beat $8.25 per month.

This is NOT a promotion for them. I saw the post here, and signed up to see if it was good deal. To be promotional I would have to get something out of it, and other than a nice web host, that's all I get.

If you need fancy features and a lot more control and reporting for your website, go elsewhere. Fatcow offers apparently basic control features, and yes it would be good to host images on and use a basic shopping cart.

I might have to try something new soon. Two times last week, my website was down. I was very upset because I lost customers as result of it being down.
