What an exciting day
and age we live in, when
human reality as it has stood
for millenia is changing at
breakneck spEEd!

This has *got* to be my
favorite news article for
2000, year to date.

Just think of what change and
development and invention
will occur when we actually
reach the true second
millenium at the end of
December 31st this year.

w@w!

"'One of the farthest-term research projects we are funding is interplanetary
Internet -- how we are going to actually extend this Internet to space, to the solar system,' Maeda said."

DARPA researchers work to speed up Internet

ya mean 2 saY that ~N0body~ (??) here remembers that unique alien who used to hang out on the eBay chatboards ~ remember that k00k who had that liddle vole named *marta*??? (that ate squid)

perhaps this was all pLaNNeD from the get-go, but just so long as Frank Black assures me that the folks on Europa (has h20) like to read b00ks, all is safe in this sector of the gaLaXy, hEy?!

So helP mE!!! This is just such an exiting time to be living in -- AN INTERNET FOR THE SOLAR SYSTEM? 0migawd!!!! (i.e., *kEwLLLL*!!)

Rad,

I don't remember the squid part ... as I recall Marta ate vole food that sKiPpy bought at Mary Lou's corner store ... but then that's a different story. (the reasoning behind non-transactional feedback doncha know!)

I'm not all that excited about interplanetary internet. I have aspirations much closer to home.

Maeda ???? ... I'd like 56K service please. Pretty please?

I can see that but light speed lag can add 2 seconds transmition time from the moon so sniping might be a problem. When there are permenant residents there what time zone will they keep?
speed of light lag from Mars if I remember right is up to 45 minutes at opposition
so you better bid a serious max bid early.
You sure won't be doing any day trading from Mars - lose your butt for sure.
I suspect UPS-Astro will be dear also.

Actually, Vint Cerf, generally credited for creating the internet (no matter what Al Gore says...) also originated the idea of taking the internet into space and did some serious work on the protocols. And also proposed adding top level domains like .moon.

There are some very serious plans for web cams and other servers on the moon, and it will probably happen within a couple of years.

There are also rumors that Disney has plans to put an internet enabled rover on the moon that would be tied in to virtual reality rides at the parks.

Is Vint Cerf related to Bennett Cerf?

Cerf also came up with the idea to imbed IP (Internet Protocol) into everything from appliances to boxes, creating a "smart evnironment." The motto for this plan, which Cerf had emblazoned on a T-Shirt:

IP in Everything!

I would love a big hi-rez plasma display on my wall showing a live earth rise over a moonscape. I will incorperate that in a SF book I am writing.

Cant ya just see it... USPS has already got a huge grin and is already developing a new Interplantetary Priority Mail Service with special options! Lets list em:

Delivery Confirmation...So you know your favorite alien will get your package. You just know those suckers like to say they didnt get their item.

Insurance....Instead of the PO running over your package we will have postal workers just releasing your package and letting it combust or fly out to space with no gravity. Then say it isn't their fault and they are not paying insurance on this claim.

Return Receipt.....if you havent heard that the package arives in one year (the standard waiting time) the PO will look into the problem. (always with no results and a major snippy a** attitude).

We will also be told that we should have known not to send to the suculants or greys...they are such a**holes. They are never content with what you sent as it wasnt described that way and the picture is not of what you sent them.

Anyone else have some ideas...would love to hear

Thanks...this gave me a good laugh!!!

amalgamated2000: that is absolutely fascinating ~ dot-MOON, for kEwL, how exciting.

I wanna be the FIRST to run an auction from eBay.mars - and I wanna be the first, so that the VERO doesn't get me & my auctions NARU'd when I auction off special MARS Bars to earthlings, shipped with care from the Red Planet.
