What would you do in a situation like that? I just received a registered letter from Canada for an auction. Inside was a card saying; enclosed is $8.00 for payment re: auction #######. Please send item to: address...

Unfortunatelly there is NO payment enclosed! letter looks unopened when it arrived here and there is no trace of money. My TOS states I only accept MO, Certified Checks or PayPal. I have a feeling the buyer will claim money was enclosed what should I do? I do have an email from the lady stating she is mailing a MONEY ORDER.

What a spot to be in Jake. I guess I would just enmail the winner and tell them that there was no payment in the envelope. Treat it like an honest mistake and ask that they send payment.

Money orders can be traced, just like checks. Your buyer must produce a copy of the cancelled, endorsed money order as proof of payment. Chances are, she just missed putting it in the envelope. However, if she insists it was sent, ask her to have it traced before you will send the merchandise. If we're talking a sizable sum of money, and she's not willing to submit another MO in the meantime to get her merchandise shipped, suggest using an escrow service. That way, she knows that she will get her merchandise, and you know that you'll get your money.

If it's any clarification...I'm usually in such a hurry to mail out stuff. About a year ago I hurried out some payments and came back to find that a money order waited patiently on the floor for me to find it. It had slipped out of the folded letter as I put it in the envelope.

Maybe this happened here too

I would write the buyer and say that the payment wasn't enclosed. It happens quite a bit. Reminds me of the ann landers article (or maybe dear abby) about the grandmother who one year decided to just give all the grandkids money for christmas. She sat down one day, wrote out checks for everyone, then preceded to fill out all the cards with the same writing "this year for christmas I decided you can just go get it your self. Merry Christmas" She was a little upset when she didn't receive a single thank you on christmas day when all the family called her. 3 months later while cleaning her desk up, she found the pile of checks sitting under a pile of paper. That was when she realized she had forgotten to put the checks inside before mailing off the cards.
