They are glass about an inch high and 6 to 7 inches wide. They show kids playing, they are transparent and wrapped around the edges with some sort of paper.

? Magic Lantern slides? like in the Bergman movie "Fanny & Alexander."

Hmmmm, I'll have to see if I can find some of those on ebay to see if that's it! Sounds reasonable.

Are they painted? They remind me of glass paintings that would be framed.

They could be magic lantern slides, but I've never seen any that size. They are usually about 3x3" or so and composed of two pieces of glass with the photographic image sandwiched in between and then sealed with tape around the edges. If these are only a single piece of glass then they can't be lantern slides.
