Has anybody else run into this? I go to a shop and the only person working is on the computer, doesn't say hi, can I help you, or anything. Yesterday I went to a shop I had never been to before and there were several items I was semi-interested in which I might have purchased with a small amount of salesmanship effort. I know some people believe in just leaving you alone and letting you shop, but it would have been nice to at least been acknowledged. I would even have understood (naturally) if the person had said something like "I'm sorry, I'm watching an auction, go ahead and look and I'll be with you shortly". But nothing, nada, even when I left. Is this the wave of the future?

Unfortunately this disregard for common courtesy and consideration for others is spreading throughout society these days. I've noticed it everywhere, not just like you describe. I wouldn't have bought anything either, and would never return to that shop.

That is just as bad as the ones who follow you around scowling at you sure that you are going to steal something.
I saw 5 young clerks stop a man who they suspected of shoplifting at a Miejer store near me. He was real agreeable and came back in with no arguement but about half way back in one of the teenage clerk felt bold and started shoving him roughly. They are very lucky it was not me.
How will they explain if he gets back in and has nothing in his pockets?

*sighs* social evolution at work....

(OT)to add: I just remember, long time ago, that one of the young store workers was watching me (too closely)
and I came up to her, looked at her in the eye, and asked: "Are you looking for something?"

she didn't say anything and shuffled off

(IT)
I noticed that the used bookstores got the computers too. One time, I noticed the Ebay site on the screen on the computer before I left this one store.
