I bought these for 50 cents. I don't know anything about glass, but I will buy anything for 50 cents.

A pal stopped by and told me they were depression glass. I told her I did not think so, and that they looked quite cheap to me. She picked one up and disagreed. I am so sure these are junk I am loathe to ask, however this gal's mother has been a dealer since 1970 and so she has learned quite a bit by osmosis?

They has a seam, shows up in the pic, and one of them has a couple of bubbles in the stem. They are heavy.

The verdict is...?

I don't know if they're depression glass, but do a search on eBay for "tiara candle*" and you'll see a few that look much like these, even some shorter ones in the same color.

I bought a pair of amber Tiara candlesticks for my mom a few months ago and they looked just like those, plus they were heavy (larger and heavier than I'd expected them to be from the picture).

That green is a very pretty color!

It's a "Sandwich" pattern, and since Depression era "Sandwich" was mostly made by Duncan & Miller, and mostly in crystal, the candlesticks are probably Tiara. Tiara was made by Indiana Glass Co. in the 1970's-90's, in many colors. (Indiana used some of the D&M molds.) Other companies made "Sandwich" patterns, too, but most were post-Depression.

Hi, the only true test for depression glass is the ultrviolet light. once the item is placed in front of the light, it will give of a glow. regular glass will not. it is a good investment to have one of these lights, for then you will know for sure it it is depression or not.

I thought the black [ultraviolet]light only worked on Vaseline glass from the depression era?

Um, no. Some Depression glass glows, but not all. Vaseline glass glows regardless of when it was made. Green Depression glass that glows is NOT Vaseline. (Vaseline glass is Vaseline colored and glows.)

I recently bought a couple of pieces of Vaseline glass from a very large Vaseline dealer. (They had hundreds of pieces--had been featured on several TV specials, etc.) They told me that only the old Vaseline glass glows, as it contained Uranium. Since it is now illegal to sell glass with Uranium in it, the new glass doesn't glow. Just passing along that bit of information.

Vaseline glass is still being made. I have bought some new Vaseline glass (i.e. made within the past 5 years). And it DOES glow. It is not illegal to make glass with uranium. It's just only allowed in limited quantities, according to what I've heard. I'm surprised that a Vaseline "expert" is disseminating serious misinformation like that! New Vaseline glass is being made by Mosser, Boyd, Summit and some overseas companies, I know for sure. Maybe by other companies, too.

But I am not a Vaseline expert, so I should let someone who is, do the talking...

Also, most non-opaque blue glass that is not cobalt blue will also glow a greenish color. This is NOT Vaseline glass. Also some ruby red glass will glow a neon orange color. This also is not Vaseline glass. And as far as I know, neither contain any uranium.

VM--Tiara glass, tho not old, has a very loyal and faithful following of collectors on eBay. These should do well---make sure to mention Tiara Sandwich in the title and all should go well!

Just a thought here though I dont think these holder are depression glass im near sure of it.

depression glass though atractive was Cheap hence the term depression glass

made with a low cost glass and process to imatate high quility since most people had little money in the depression but still wanted to look the part.

the glass back when sold for low price in some cases as little as .03 to .10 per dish back then which was even to much for the really bad off at that time.

to show you how far we have come today from that time even in the wrost economy today people will pay $300 to $3000 for the right peice or pieces of this depression glass

buy the way black light is not a test for all depression glass but a test for vaseline glass which in some cases could be depression glass but not alway they still make vaseline glass today.

in fact carnival glass of all types came back in to favor in the 70s and is still being made today its hard in some cases with out markings dates or names for just anyone to tell a reproduction piece from the real deal.

still for 50 cents you got a good deal these are great looking for sure and even if you never sold them would be nice for use.
