Looks good!
A word of caution though - a lot of bidders (myself included) steer clear of auctions with reserves.

Looks very nice.

$9.00 seems a bit steep for shipping given it's weight.

Nice ad, but I think your shipping charge is to high.

Looks fine to me. The 9.00 shipping charge sounds high though, unless the thing is extra heavy.

A good way to try to be competive is to do everything possible to keep shipping costs as low as possible. I believe it helps you get more bids. I know it can't hurt. Good luck!

loosecannon,

If I recall correctly, 1KG is around 2 1/2 lbs which would be about $4.30 priority. Does seem steep...maybe it's shipped via UPS or FedEx.

Make your starting bid the minimum you would accept for it. Also not having reserves saves you money as well as I think Ebay charges to have a reserve on an auction.

Did he have the weight of the thing in the description? I missed that if he did. Way too high then.

Lockpros

Charging a flat rate for shipping instead of the actual shipping cost is fine as long as it's not unusually high. Bidders just don't care for that. You may want to reconsider the 9.00 charge. Just my opinion, no offense intended.

Eventer,

Nothing but respect from me for the "older" generation - just ask Pat & Joice

*edited to add:

Lockpros - great job for a first timer! How easy did you find AW's Auction Manager to work with?

loosecannon,

He stated in his "specifications" section that the net weight was 1KG. So I jumped to a conclusion that the gross weight (with packing) wouldn't bring it up to the 3lb limit.

lockpros,

VERY nice ad overall...well presented & articulate, super pictures & it loaded very fast on my PC.

The TOS are a bit thin unless X.com is ALL you will accept as payment options.

Harumph, I'm the "older" generation now? I'm wounded & toddling off to bed before I start drooling on my keyboard & they have to send the nurse to get me.

Go to the auction page and down below the title, your name and all that, but above the description you'll find a "revise" link. Click on that and fill in the blanks and continue on until you change the price and find the "submit changes" button.

what would a good shipping charge be for 1kg

I suppose the thing comes in a box, but you'll be putting that box into a slightly larger box for shipment? The total weight might be between 3 and 4 pounds? 5.40 Priority would cover that. If it's under 3 pounds total then 4.30 Priority would be the actual amount. If you wanted to do flat rate to cover your "handling costs" you could charge 5 or 6 bucks flat rate. Either way it's a lot better sounding than 9.00.

Your auction looks really good. Also you have my favorite dog on there! Some people may be reluctant to bid as you have no feedback but everyone has to start somewhere. I have purchased many times from new sellers and have always been treated well. I agree the shipping rate seems high so maybe with handling it should be more like $5.00 or $6.00?

lockpros,

You can ask 10 different people on AW that question & get 11 different answers..

What you charge for shipping/handling is YOUR business decision. And it will be determined by a whole list of decision you have to make:

1. Ship via USPS, UPS or FedEx (different places, different charges)

2. Do you want insurance, delivery confirmation, etc.? All have various charges, some depending on value which will factor into the final shipping fee.

3. What is your costs in packing material? Does it require specialized boxes or can you use a priority? Packing materials DO cost money & this should be factored in to either your starting price or your shipping fee.

Once you have determined all that, you will have more information about what costs YOU are going to incur & how best to pass them along to the customer.

To get you started, check out the USPS site for information on fees, such as the actual price from them, plus costs for insurance, delivery confirmation or other services you may wish to use.

http://www.usps.com

You might also run a search on similar items (if there are any) on ebay & see what kind of shipping fees your competitors are including. Never hurts to know what the competition is doing.

I'm sorry but there isn't one standard answer on this..it's something you really have to decide for yourself.

Tim,

To be perfectly within ebay specifications, you need to choose the smaller size PayPal logo. ebay gets very anal about the size of these ads. The currently authorized sized ones are about 1/3 the size of the one you have now.

I think it looks quite good! At first, I thought you were selling a dog. LOL (just kidding!) I could imagine having the life scared out of me, though, if you leave it on and you're sitting watching television and the "dog" suddenly started barking. LOL

A couple of things I would suggest: Since you checked off that you accept checks and money orders, I would add that to the shipping info.

Also, I am one of those people who likes to read "About Me" pages. Since you are a new seller, looking at your ad certainly gives me the feeling that you know what you're talking about. I would want to know more about you, ie- your background, etc. I immediately looked for your "About Me" page.
Just a suggestion.

I think it's a great start!

Lockpro -
My neighbors HAD one of those. They placed "Rex" on their patio, because he had a hard time seeing through the brick walls and metal door.

The first time it went off when my cat strolled by, Kitty levitated and left a cloud of cat fur behind as he streaked for home. It took him a cuople of days to realize that there was no dog. Then he walked up to it, sniffed it as it hysterically barked, did a 180 and sprayed the speaker with a very eloquent expression of his distaste. He did this several times, every time it barked at him.

Rex stopped working within a couple of days under the constant chemical attack.
