From the announcement board:
[i]*** SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE MOVED! ***
*** THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 ***
The eBay system will be unavailable on Thursday morning, September 21, between 00:01 PT and
02:00 PT for scheduled maintenance. Please note that this will replace our regularly
scheduled maintenance on Friday morning for this week only.
During tonight’s maintenance, we are planning to make additional changes to the system to
help address the hardware issues we encountered last night. We believe these changes will
help eliminate the hardware problems experienced last night. As always we will try to make
the improvements as quickly and as safely as possible.
Although items ending during a scheduled maintenance time are not covered by our current
Outage Policy, we want to extend auctions as a courtesy to our members. Thus, we will extend
auctions scheduled to end between Thursday, September 21 at 00:01 PT and 03:00 PT by 24
hours.
If you do not wish to extend your auction, you may end the item at:

Quite a throw the dog a bone haughty gesture for eBay to extend auctions when it is taking the site down with a few hours notice. Maybe the sellers who have auctions ending during this time send eBay a warm and fuzzy thank you note for their magnanimous generosity. This looks like it is going to be a long weekend.

Man, that sucks. I have a few items ending tomorrow morning... My rationale was that the market for the items that I'm selling (computer geeks) tend to be night owls. My auction doesn't end within the scheduled maintenance, but that throws away 3 hours worth of bidding.
