Yesterday, I was watching an auction. The bid stayed at $11.75 (as an example, not the actual price of said item), with 5 bids.
Today, I look in, and the price is still at $11.75...but the bid count has jumped to 45!!
This isn't a dutch auction, and is only for one item.
What happened? Am I missing something here?

That is strange, I'd take a look at the high bidder and see what else if anything they were bidding on and see if the pattern repeated anywhere. Is the bidder new to eBay? Some don't understand why raising their bid doesn't increase the bid price.
An after thought. Did that make the item advance into the 'hot item' catagory?

I had that happen on one of my auctions. My guess is that the bidder is using esnipe or some similar service and has set the system to place the bid multiple time to insure they don't miss it. There's currently a thread (joke by jerry12) about doing this in a dutch auction.
In my case, I have a service that emails me when a bid is placed. So I was receiving an email about every 10 seconds, but the price never went up.
