I am new to Ebay and want to sell many items that are likely to be of "gay interest". I have seen items listed as such and wondered if that was actually legal.

None of the items themselves are illegal, they're just your typical gay videos and accessories.

I was not aware that it was illegal to be gay. In fact, I know that the book category includes a section for "Gay and Lesbian" books for what it is worth. I think it would cause a problem if it was of a pornographic nature and you did not list it in the Adult section, however.

Best advice is to check closed auctions on Ebay for the same or similar items that you wish to sell and see where they are listing.

I don't deal in that type of item myself, but have run across items as I was browsing categories.

Foz,

Because you have just signed up with a username name very like a current active member, I have suspended the new name so there will be no confusion.

I hope this suspension is a standard practice that has been done in the past and is not related to the topic of the new member's question...

amalgamated2000,

The topic and the suspension of the I.D. are not related.

The thread is not locked so there is nothing stopping discussion.

Hope that helps,

Are there any instances in the past of members having their posting priveleges suspended becuase they had a name that was similar to another users?

I have been a member since March and I have seen it done 2 times. There may be more, but I am only aware of 2 'cause I was following the post.

I can think of 3 or 4 times that it has happened because of closeness of names.

What does the newness of the name have to do with anything? If it's similar, so what?

I believe this is probably more of an issue of discrimination than anything else.

My ignorance is showing, but how did the term "friends of dorothy" come to mean gay or lesbian?
Not my name on ebay.

I think it is patently unfair that the original poster of this thread had to be suspended.

I'd say that unless your item is primarily oriented toward a gay audience, I'd leave "gay interest" out of the description. Some listers use this description on any item which contains, for example, a picture of a young man. I believe that there exist a body of bidders who imagine that they're not "gay interested", and thus this item is not for them.

If it is oriented purely toward a gay audience, such as a gay themed adult video, then it would seem very appropriate.

Theoretically, selling any "adult" items is risky because some jurisdictions will claim that you are violating their obscenity laws if you ship said items to their area.

And, in some jurisdictions, ANY gay videos might be considred obscene.

But that's pretty much beside the point. If you are selling "mainstream" items, I think your risk of prosecution are minimal, to say the least.

I have no idea what the best way to go about marketing said items might be, but you should know that the search feature does not work in eBay's adult areas.

paulstar ok how would you like if I make an id named paulster and start posting & picking fights under paulster. Use common sense first b4 jumping on the civil rights bandwagon. BTW I have been fighting for months for an adult search engine in eBay for all so don't around going on your civil crusade against me. Yes that search engine should work in the gay/lesbian section too, hey I am PC

No, no one appointed me the PC police. But I happen to have an aversion to discrimiation. I just wanted to make sure that was not the case here, and I'm satisfied that it is not. Simple as that.

It depends on what you are selling that is
of "Gay interest" that may or may not offend
"us" (since I am Gay myself! )...

I sell alot of Lesbian and/or Gay themed
books, Gay musical artists (kd lang, Melissa
Etheridge, ect), Lesbian magazines, ect. So
I put lesbian/gay in my item title, so it
gets "hit" on by people looking at either
at just the name of the person or book/mag
I am selling, or just the gay/lesbian items.

Also, I had a some complaints from one person
who was "offended" that I put "gay interest"
in a title for a Judy Garland item - when she
has a HUGE Gay fanbase. Apparently this
person couldn't see that (altho he was Gay
himself!). So I removed it.

So, it depends on how you word things. As a
"non-PC" lesbian, I don't offend easily, so
I see things that would offend others, but
don't bother me in the least.

Also, I don't think the moderator here was not being discriminatory, otherwise this thread would have been closed down - which it hasn't. I know AW has alot of Gay members
on it, and who knows - maybe a couple staff
members are too!

In regards to the term: "Friend of Dorothy"... was a term used to among Gays in
the 40's to let each other know in "code" that they were in the same camp. It had something to do with Dorothy from the Wizard
of Oz - apparently "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was (and is) is a VERY popular song
among the older (and maybe some of the younger!) Gay men, and Judy Garland holds a
high esteem as an idol for them.

I understand jumping to conclusions. Went in a mexican restaurant in LA with a Black friend. They seated several people of same party size ahead of us that came in later.
When the maitre'di (spelling?) came back I asked- "Is he skipping us because I you are black?'Cause I will cut his ears off if he is."
He said - "Nah - They treat everybody crappy. Thay think that's what makes a place exclusive." We were next.

Does this mean that you don't believe that there are heterosexuals that are not gay interested?

Well, I can't explain this as well as some others, but it means when someone posts a thread just to disrupt things. What "Foz" was doing is trying to make everyone think that he/she was "Fez", and insinutating that Fez is gay. Fez and Ginger12 got into a tiff yesterday resulting in Ginger12's suspension. Ginger12 allegedly came back as "Foz".
