I was cleaning out my closets today and ran across a formal gown that my matron of honor wore at my wedding several years ago. She was from out of state and was supposed to send for it once she got home but never did. Since she was about 6 inches taller than me there is no way I will ever be able to wear this even if I had some place to wear it to. I was debating putting it up on ebay starting very low just to get it out of my closet. But since this is not something I normally sell I am not sure what info to provide with it. I can guess that I would add the information on the tags and will include a picture of it. But not sure what else would be helpful. Any suggestions?

I've never sold clothing, but from what I've read on these boards, it would be a good idea to measure every measurable part of the dress. Sizes widely vary from different manufacturers. I'd put as much detail about the dress as possible.

yah, measure everywhere! bust, waist, hips, length, everything. also because it is a formal gown, decide on how youre going to ship it and define the cost of shipping. let the buyer know this, too. if i were to buy a formal gown (even with great decriptions and pictures) i would want it to arrive un-smushed and not in a priority mail mylar envelope. get it? best wishes at your auction!

Hi,
Formals do sell well but make sure:
You measure everything - especially on formals - sizes are not enough.
You are prepared to ship in a formal box - you will need to purchase one. Buyers of formals want the item to come ready to wear. Add to shipping expense - they run around $5-$10 depending on size needed.
Accurately describe the color. Very important as a shade of can make the difference between a happy buyer or not. A shade off on a top or pants doesn't nearly make the difference a shade off on an entire outfit.
Lots of pictures. They sell better when you photograph either someone in them or on a mannequin. People like to see how they lay when worn. Photographing from a hangar does not do the trick.
Pick the timing of when to list - dark colors are good to list now - for fall dances and holiday events. Light colors are great to list in April for proms and summer wedding season.
GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!!
Check on shipping prices before too - as usually higher for this type. Quote in your auction - buyers do not like to see will quote after auction or depends on city etc. Buy the box, put the dress in, weigh it, add on your handling and put the total s/h/i fee right in the auction. When they are bidding on high dolor items - they do not like to not know the s/h/i fees.
