Hi. I have a buyer who insists she sent a money order. I have no record of receiving it. I told her this and she insists that she sent it. She said she found the receipt and called them and they said it was cashed. I don't know whether to believe her. I guess I could have made a mistake but I don't feel good about this. I read all the threads here and I don't ever remember ever reading that a person could CALL and check to see if a money order was cashed. Does anyone know if this is true or am I getting my leg pulled.

I don't know if it is as easy as a call, but you can trace them. Maybe she can get a copy of it so you can check the signature on the back?

Many of them you can call on. There should be a number for the MO, and an 800 number to call. I beleive they can tell you to whom it was addressed to as well. In any event, there is a trail. Maybe your bank can tell if you cashed/deposited an item in the same amount. Check your deposit slips. I would work with this customer until it is resolved. You might just have to hold off until then.

In any event, she is protected--the only good thing about money orders. So she doesn't have anything to worry about.

Absolutely!! I had a postal money order that I sent to someone. Well, they never received the money order. Meanwhile I couldn't contact this person, they wouldn't answer their email. So finally I went to the P.O. I had them trace the money order. I don't know where the money order was however it wasn't cashed and I was able to get my money back.
I had to wait 2 months before I could do this. I think there was also a fee.

US Postal service requires a 30 waiting period prior to applying for a refund.

The wait for the refund can be over 60 days.

Some sellers will wait the 30-days if you can show them the receipt. I scan the receipt and e-mail a copy of it to them.

I also mention the fact that the USPS will investigate the claim.

It is amazing how seller's will find the "lost" money order whenever they know you have the goods.

From personal experience, yes you can call some of the money order companies to see if the money order has been cashed. You cannot find out who cashed it, just when. I had my local ISP(who is no longer mine lol) send me the wrong p.o. box by 2 digits to send them their payment and then complained that they never received it. It had been cashed, but not by them. Filed a claim and they ate the money since they made the mistake. Ask your customer if they can scan you a copy, then call the money order company and find out. The original purchaser of the money order is the only one who can fill out a claim on most of these. Good luck, Angelique

If it is a western union money order they have a number you call and then put in the money order number and it lets you know if it has been cashed

A good reason to prefer sending a personal check. Much easier to see whether it has been cashed and by whom.
