I received a notice email earlier today stating the usual "you've got cash!" saying that a customer sent me payment through Paypal. It was for a fairly large dollar amount.

I just went to my account to verify the payment was there, and it shows I received NO payments today. I've *never* had this happen before and I'm concerned.

Has this happened to anyone else before? Is it a glitch? Did my customer really not send me the payment?

you *may* have got a fake notice. Don't ship until you can confirm you have the money.

I had sent this customer a Billpoint invoice to begin with, at their request. They had emailed me a few days later asking if I'd received payment, and I had not. I told them I never received the Billpint payment. So they said they would pay by Paypal. Today I get this notice from Paypal saying I've got cash, but when I go to my account, there is no cash from this customer - I didn't receive *any* payments from Paypal today. Buyer has less than 160 feedbacks and 5 negs. I just wrote him and told him I received a notice from Paypal but no money is in my account.

I would send that email (including a copy of all headers) to PayPal and Ebay with your story. I have no doubt both parties will be very interested in seeing it.

Does the email saying "you've got cash" also tell you that you have to sign up to collect it?

If they sent [email protected] the wrong email, the email can go through, but since it didn't match your account exactly it just treats you as a seller that doesn't have an account. [email protected] or [email protected] etc.

This isn't a problem restricted to PayPal, I tried some other services and the same thing will happen.

Hi,

Emails are notification of a payment but do not impact the transaction at the account level. I would recommend writing the sender to see if they had a typo in the email address (a period at the end of .com is common, as is inputting an incorrect domain name). This allows email delivery because the ISP/email provider's servers will scrub the error to allow the email to get through.

I've had the opposite thing happen. I never received the e-mail, but when I looked in my paypal account (as a result of receiving other e-mails) there was a payment there from someone who I had not received an e-mail about. It had been there for a couple of days and I do state in my terms that I ship within 24 hours of payment so I scoured all my e-mails figuring I must have missed it. But, it was never received. Go figure!

Contact your customer and verify your PayPal account address with them. Their account should still be showing your payment as unclaimed. If so, have them cancel it and resend, making sure they use the correct address. There are several errors that can be made by a customer that will allow the email notification to reach the recipient, while the money sits unclaimed because the addressed entered by the sender doesn't match any existing account. Situations I've seen mentioned so far:

1) entering email.com instead of email.net as the domain in the address
2) cutting and pasting the address and leaving a "." at that end: email.net.

Onsale...

Look at the email you received from Pay Pal...
What email address was the email sent to ?
Whatever that address is(yours) is where the
$$$ is...Waiting for you to claim it...

Hope this helps...

I receive Paypal payments on almost a daily basis. I just checked again the email address and it *was* my email address that it shows the payment was sent to. But when I go to the account - no payment is there. I have emailed the buyer, asking him to double check his account and to see if it is marked as unclaimed.

Well, we found out the problem. My customer put a period at the end of my email address, like someone here on this board posted. He cancelled that payment and then paid me through Paypal again, this time it showing up in my account.

Thanks for the tips!

You've bragged on Yahoo's PayDirect and your success with it, I know its not an answer, but have you tried sending payment via Yahoo PayDirect with email address close enough for the ISP but not close enough for an account match (com instead of net, etc)? I have. The problem isn't restricted to PayPal.
