I'm having a consistant problem uploading images to AW. While I can make transfers during the morning and early afternoon the late afternoon and evening almost always results in the process timing out.

I'm running a P133/W95 with 32 ram thru a dial up connection using a 33 modem with AOL as ISP.

I usually try one picture at a time which are approx. 55K in size. When things are working well I can often load 2, 3 or 4 pictures in one upload. Other times of the day even one picture repeatedly times out.

I've recently started using AMPRO and the transfers from AW back down to AMPRO work fine in bulk and the launch of 10 or more auctions from my computer back to AW/AMPRO also works fine at any time.

I've tried preparing for the upload by shuting down the computer, starting up again, clearing cache, closing all programs and then just sending one image.

Since it is a time of day problem I assume my slower system when involved with a busy net may cause these "timed out" results but any imput or suggestions would be appreciated.

I've experienced the same problem when sending images to a web site for use with individual listings prepared thru Auction Ass't, so I don't expect AW is a factor in this problem. Seems that it's me and/or the net when doing image uploads.

I am using a lite version of Adobe Photo for processing images and intend to explore upgrading my s/w to see if 2x2 inch images can't be reduced below 55K and still provide sufficient quality.

I don't see another board here at AW where images are a foucs of discussion but if one exists, I would appreciate being pointed in that direction.

Sorry pat...One quick response, or tip for reston...

If your photo editor does not provide a good compression system, there is the JPEG OPTIMIZER, a great product available at http://www.xat.com/jpegopt/index.html..
It is low-cost, offers free upgrades, and they used to GIVE away the Image Optimizer once you registered the JPEG Optimizer. The best 29.00 program...
Simple to use...Now I am running off, before pat chases me away

Thanks Pat, I'll post as you suggested.
I hope you'll leave this thread open as I expect it is a system, s/w or net problem and not connected to AW.
I hope that users may have some suggestions as already done by SHOSHANAH (thanks)that may add to the help available from staff.

I got a response from staff on the AW.com Services Board but their only suggestions were to upgrade to AOL 5.0 or make the image size smaller than 55K. They reported there has been mention of problems with uploads of 50K size or greater thru weak connections.

I've hesitated to go 5.0 as there have been reported problems from auction listers.

I do think the answer for me is to reduce compressed size of images. I checked and I'm actually using Adobe PhotoDeluxe 2.0. As I only use it for auction images, I think some upgrade that gives me smaller file sizes for the images is a better solution than using a stand alone program. I did check the program Shoshanah suggested and that seems like a solution but I'm hesitent to add an additional step in the process if I can achieve the smaller size with an upgrade.

I'm attempting to repeatedly list a large number of smalls and even one more step applied to 50 or 60 images per week is something I want to avoid if possible.

I guess the question comes down to what is the size a 2x2 inch image file can be and what is the least of the Adobe programs that will achieve that compression?
