I wish Ebay would do something about this it seems to get worse and worse espically with the Aol address. I don't know what they can do but there has to be something to stop all the various names that these people are registering under. They get neg's or suspended and they just sign up again and start all over.

Wait, I'm confused... this is an AOL-phenonemon? What about the other freebie addresses like hotmail?

I've had my share of NPB's, but I've never noticed any correlation with AOL users...

Well yes there are other freebie address that cause problems, But for myself it seems like the majority of the NPB's are AOL . I don't have a problem with Aol it's just thats where most of my dead beats come from. AOL also allows you 5 screen names and you can change them as many times as you want.

Hi. I've also noticed that a big majority of "not serious" bidders are from AOL. Even though "hotmail" addresses are anonymous, in order to register a hotmail address with Ebay, one needs to give a credit card number or a "legit" email address. I'm not saying that ALL my deadbeats are AOL....many bidders just don't want to complete a transaction..for whatever reason. BUT....if someone wants to mess around with my auctions (and it HAS been done many times)..it is always an AOL'er. Please, AOL'ers..don't take offense...I am also AOL.

I am an AOL'er and I have been very excited to see all the ads Ebay has on AOL these days.

The welcome screen seems to have a new and creative Ebay link everyday. It seems these folks are checking Ebay out because Ebay is doing us all a favor and advertising on AOL.

I currently have 10 Winning bids from AOL'ers who have 0 feedback. Am I concerned? not really, If they turnout to be deadbeat I am out of nothing, just get my fees back and relist. Although this is inconvenient I am very happy to see the advertising bringing more folks to my business.

In a brick and morter business people come in a browse all the time, people buy and return, and others turn into regular customers who keep coming back.

I would much rather have a NPB than a customer who payed, received item, then returned it . It actually saves you alot of money in the long run to have the customer not pay in the beginning.

Anyway that is my take on things...

Good Day To all!

Cheerio!

Forgot to add.

Ebay is doing something about the NPBidder problem.

Had a bidder on an auction early on last week, half way through the auction the bid is canceled, being my first canceled bid I went on to investigate.... Next to the bidders name (an email address) was: ADMINISTRATIVE CANCEL BIDDER NARU.

Well the auction ended without another bidder so I contacted the bidder and offered her the product (considering I get paid in advance I had nothing to lose) Bidder was very happy I had contacted her and has already sent a Money Order, She also informed me that Ebay had canceled her account because someone at her home address had done something.

Seems that Ebay is doing a lot more than we know about. This person was a new bidder with 0 feedback so Ebay moved pretty fast in canceling her bids.

Worked out well for me!!

So are you saying that NPBs can just create a new user name and then mess around with auctions all over again? That's where my worries come from. This bidder who has not contacted me at all (many emails from me and now ebay) has bid on about 8 diamond auctions varying from 100.00 to 500.00 (he won mine) and also on very expensive motorcycles going for over 1000.00. Wouldn't ebay see this and come to the same conclusion? He has a "shades" icon and no feedback. Can he just keep doing this? It's maddening!

Well, with Aol you can have 5 screennames that also gives you 5 different E-mail address, and you can change you screen name at any time thus giving the person another email address. With Ebay I think they sign up with the new email and as long as they have another credit card number they create another ebay account. I wonder were they can get so many credit card numbers?? Does ebay verify the card number to the name and address, this I'm not sure about? If they don't then I have heard of Credit card number generators that create numbers??? Does anyone know if ebay checks card numbers against names and address??????

Not too sure about Ebay checking against addresses, but you would think that would be the policy. Before they charge anything to the credit card I am sure they check the address.

However, they certainly are checking newbies addresses against old ones who have been NARU'd.

If they have shades with 0 feedback then they must have thought of a more creative name because feedback follows you with your shades. Shades dont bother me at all. ( I changed my name once and wore them for awhile) My feedback stayed with me.

Lots of newbies out there so be gentle. We want them to keep coming back.

Sometimes it is better to cut your loses and get your fees back from Ebay and relist.

Of the 3 NPB alerts I filed last week I have one AOL, one Yahoo, and one from someone who is using their work e-mail to bid.

Autumn Moon: I guess you do not realize how EASY it is to forge an AOL address. Email addies are simple to forge. I've read about that for YEARS.

This SURGE in public posts about non-paying bidders, if it actually represents a factual phenomenon, then I believe it represents some external threat against eBay, perpetrated against its individual sellers.

And NOT a huge number of the General Public -- who I do NOT believe behave this way.

The reports about non-paying bidders have simply soared so high, that I NO LONGER believe in them being what they are SUPPOSED to appear to be.

NO WAY.

You DO NOT need a credit card to open an EBAY account... Only need one to sell... You may have unlimited EBay user names

I really do not think AOL has much to do with the source of bad bidders. I was on AOL almost two years. Most of the bad bidders are those who are just irresponsible. AOL just happens to have the lion's share of users, so naturally they have a proportional large amount of people who are deadbeats.

Also many people start on AOL, ditch it and simply forget to update their email address on eBay or elsewhere. I look at most AOL users as recreational surfers who haven't graduated yet.

We are also getting a fresh wave of new eBayers (happens every fall) so there will be plenty of cranky wet diaper newbies to contend with along with deadbeat ones who are unclear on the concept.

I havent had any probs with AOL bidders...and Im on AOL myself. Sometimes its handy, because I just IM them or they IM me for questions or info they need. Also, keep in mind that sometimes AOL loses mail...ours and whomever else emails us. So, I got another email account at yahoo and put it on my ABOUT ME page, just in case I get no responses from them, or vice versa. That way, there is more than one way to contact me.

I have 7 NPB alerts. Dont know whats going on, but Im not a happy camper. And only 3 of those are on AOL.

You DO have to have a credit card to register on Ebay if you're using a "non-verifiable e-mail address", i.e. Hotmail, Yahoo, Excite, etc. (I know whereof I speak, as my Ebay address is with Hotmail.) The idea is that, if you're using an ISP-based email, your identity can be verified through your ISP registration. Last I knew, you don't need a unique credit card for each User ID on Ebay, so the baddies can keep re-registering with the same card, as long as they can get a new email address.

There's got to be something in the air--I also just filed our first NPB alert, and it seems to be taking buyers FOREVER to get their checks in the mail.
