Ok, you all aren't gonna believe how I stumbled across this one!

I was just typing away, saving auctions to be listed and my dog (a miniature pinscher) jumped up on my lap, onto my desk. I kept typing, and as she walked in front of my monitor, her paw stepped somewhere on my keyboard and *poof* this website showed up on my monitor!

http://www.usabancshares.com

I just bought a new ergonomic keyboard with 19 hotkeys but I can't find out how this came up for the life of me!

Anyways, it looks like a really good bank - you only need $1 minimum balance! I just signed up (thanks to my dog!) LOL!

Give your dog a can of "Mighty Dog" (my personal favorite, a bit on the rich side, but great flavor) for her work. That's a sweet deal for someone that wants an online bank. No fee, ATM/Debit card, up to $10 rebate in ATM fees, and 5% interest. I'm impressed.

Not sure how long they can offer that, but while its there for an online bank account for small sums it's the best deal I've seen.

This looks almost too good to be true. I like that fact that it's associated with Yahoo!, which I hope means it can carry some of Yahoo's good reputation. Can anyone think of anything that could be a "catch" or a down-side to this deal? I'm not really savvy to the dangers of internet banking.

I couldn't find anything negative about this bank at all! I've done lots of research on different online banks and this one looks the best so far! I really liked X.com but now they are charging a $12/month fee if your account falls below $100. This new bank reminds me of X.com before they changed their policy. Actually, this bank offers even more - they even have online bill paying.

I also ran across another free one from a list URL someone had posted to one of the threads. It's called "American Bank" and can be located at

http://www.pcbanker.com

They require a $1 minimum balance also and I was surprised to see they are located in my home state.

So, there's another option.

Weeeeeeeell, the downside is it won't be there under those terms forever. You can't offer free checks, ATM/Debit cards, $10 a month ATM rebates, and 5% interest on accounts where there are no fees or minimum balance forever. The upside is that you aren't signing any contracts for long term service.

http://www.fdic.gov/bank/individual/online/safe.html can offer you some tips on what to look out for with online banks. If you have doubts about the bank you can look their at their numbers and FDIC status at this url http://www2.fdic.gov/structur/search/index_inst.cfm. The bank that Valerie47 offered the link to can be looked up under the name vBank and it is a FDIC bank with USABancShares.com being the holding company.

I signed up with usabancshares back when gomez.com was offering $100 if you parked $100 at the bank for 3 months. I've had my account for about 5 months there, got my $100 check from gomez.com and I'm very happy with them. I don't know if gomez.com is still offering that deal, but they did have several going for different online banks.

(And now my $ that was at x.com--all $27 of it--will go to usabancshares as well)

Please repeat after me: There is no free lunch...

I had a girlfriend that would argue that. When we went to a grocery wholesale warehouse there would be free samples at the end of every aisle, cheese, pizza squares, chicken on a toothpick, etc. It was embarrassing to be with her, she'd pig out at these sample tables without shame. I'd just and look the other way, the age difference was such that many thought her my daughter (okay, I'm a dirty old man).

While there are might not be a free lunch, many banks offer introductory rates, bonuses, and offers. Those standing on the sidewalk repeating "There's no free lunch" miss out on some attractive deals. As long as I'm not signing any long term contract I'll establish accounts for that free piece of cheese, if the effort is minimal, and most are. I've opened bank accounts for 6 months for the introductory bonuses, and then closed it. I've had a many meals at Olive Garden with my wife that were paid for by bonuses from "new accounts", its a lot nicer than eating in the wholesale grocery store warehouse, but just as cheap and without the public embarrassment.

Was wondering if any one else signed up with this? I signed up on 10/3 and yesterday received my package (paperwork)in the mail and today I received my Debit Mastercard and my free checks! They give you interest on all balances over $1 and offer bill-paying.

Seems like an "improved" version of X.com without the fees!

I signed up, got my card today, no checks yet. Have set up several payments - you only need type in "Voice Stream" for example, and if another user in their data base is paying them, it will pull all the payment info up and all you have to do is enter your acct. number. I was the first to enter my cities utility company (1 million people) and I got a zing out of that.

Couple of things...
For the 1st 30 days, checks used to fund the acct. are held for 10 BUSINESS days, so your funds will not be available for a spell. Electronic transfers are available immediately - this includes from paydirect/paypal/etc. though. Customer support is very good, I have called several times and hold time has been less than a minute and the rep knowledgeable. Holy cow, they act like a BANK, I love it!

I've received my debit card, checks, and disclosure agreement, but still no PIN number yet to activate the debit card. PayDirect initiated a deposit to them Fri, 20 Oct 2000 9:0:47 PDT I'm mildly curious how long before it shows up. Considering my opening balance would be wiped out by the purchase of a single "Happy Meal" it seems to be an ideal pickup point.

5% interest and up to $10 a month on ATM rebates with a minimum balance requirement of $1 is a good deal.

Just some points of information gleened from Gomez.com rankings of online banks:

USABancShares.com ranks 27th overall, out of 58 online banks.
They rank 9th in overall cost, but fall to 31st in customer confidence, 37th in ease-of-use, and 41st in access to resources (the number of banking services you can access).

Obviously, if you're using USABancShares.com and are happy with it, that's the important part: go with what works for you. And in case anyone's curious, the online bank I use isn't part of the Gomez.com rankings.
