I have received at least 4 e-mails today from people I do not know. There is no subject on any of them, and they all contain a 5 digit number. The 5 digit number has been different all 4 times. Any clue what's going on.

I've had two of them.
I've heard of some emails having a type of tracking bug embedded in them such that the sender can tell when an email is opened. This would tell him which email addresses are live, even without the sender replying.
bhearsch, abacaxi, or dc9a320, ye defenders of internet sleuthing knowledge: Can any of you shed light on this?

I received one also, but it was holding up my mail downloading. So, I retrieved it through my Springmail (Web-Based) account and noticed that it said 534KB or so, with an "Incorrect Address" next to sender's name....so I never opened it.. just DELETED IT..Figured it was probably a virus...

How do you delete without opening?
I have received email from Mr Privacy as have a lot of other people, I understand, and want to delete it, but the only way I know how to delete is to open it first. I'm not computer literate!!

Click on the READ Tab, then place a check mark in the box by the first line "Mark Message READ After Displaying for..." and in the little box at end of line, type however long you want the Email to remain closed...I have it set for 30 seconds. That gives me time to HIGHLIGHT it, view it and delete it, without it opening. Or if really suspicious, click on it to just HIGHLIGHT IT and immediately DELETE.
I am not very scientific... I am sure there must be a better way, but it works for me...

oh! and in my Springmail, the web-based one, all I have to do is put a check mark by the email and click delete.

Thank you, Shoshanah. I did what you said, but then I didn't know what to do after I typed in the 30 seconds. I really am a klutz when it comes to this stuff. I really wish I hadn't insisted that my son only show me how to use ebay!!!!

Hello everyone. I haven't received any of these emails that you're referring to so I really can't be of any help. However, I definitely would take abacaxi's advice and NOT open them. You can try sending the entire body with headers to spamcop and see if they can determine where the email originated from and then they can send in a complaint to the appropriate domain and ISP on your behalf.
I have had success closing down some of these spammers by using spamcop and I recommend their service.

How do the numbers circumvent spam filters? Would this explain why most of the spam I get has a large amount of spaces at the end of the subject, followed by a -xxxxx? Wouldn't this make it *easier* for spam filters by filtering out anything with " -" in the subject?
Not that this matters, but I get combos of letters instead of numbers.
