......I took a load and I brought a load back. I found a big box of old telephones, you know the old heavy bakelite type, a box full of old lamp parts and a couple of boxes of books and old magazines. I just cant believe that people are throwing this sort of stuff out. I know from past sales that I will be able to clean up and sell most of what I found for a nice price. At the city landfill they generally dont allow persons to pick up and take stuff, but if you are quick about it and hide it in your vehichle then they really cant do much. It kinda makes me wonder about all the good useable/saleable stuff that gets crushed and covered over. Do any of you ever take a load and bring a load back? If you look at it ironically it's kinda like an exchange, hehe.

That's why my husband won't let me go to the dump! He said he would leave me if I ever come back with someone's garbage - but it's OK to pay for it at a tag sale.

Nobody is allowed to take it out because the dump people do the scavaging themselves and dont want you to get what they consider THEIRS.

Allright Yellowstone!! Yes--just an exchange of property. That's what we do when we occasionaly donate to Goodwill or another donation booth. It's like Christmas! We leave our unwanted goodies and sorta kinda help ourselves to what others do not want that are outside on the curb--never inside a container. Will I burn in hell for this? Nah---just a matter of priorities. Has anyone seen the Goodwill auction site online? They are doing very very well!

I didn't go to the dump today but a good dump story nonetheless.
Friend of mine closed up her and deceased husband's store. They bought/sold everything.
Think of it as a one stop flea market with 25 of the item you want.
Along with many thousands of other things she dumpstered 12 Olivetti Divisumma 18 calculators from the late 60s. These were new, mint in the box Divisummas with manuals, covers and chargers. This calculator is in the Museum of Modern Art and is a design icon by an Italian designer. There has been only 1 in this condition ever offered on ebay to my knowledge. The young kid who put it up found it in his grandfather's home. It started at $20 and ended at $800+.

Obviously you don't live in these parts, jeanyu, where "donation box shopping" is a criminal offense.
I'm sure, of course, that when you "exchange" goods, you make sure that what you're taking away is equal in value to what you're donating...

You help yourselves at Goodwill donation sites? And because it isn't actually in the container yet it miraculously isn't theft? You know Walmart is doing fairly well, have you seen their stock prices, why not just help yourself to some stuff on their loading dock, after all, it hasn't made it into the store yet.
You are absolutely right, it's just a matter of priorities... your greed has a higher priority than your ethics. There may very well be treasures among the trash but they don't belong to you and taking them is stealing no matter how you choose to rationalize your actions.

yellowstone, I'm lmao, for some reason I am picturing the pickup truck from "Grapes of Wrath". In Ohio it is only against the law if it is in the container. I know, we called the police on a lady. They said, if it is still on the ground, its trash, in the container is private property.

Incidentally, what I dumped was household garbage and not good useable stuff. It was not exactly an exchange of property and what I picked up was someone elses garbage, no matter that it was good useable stuff to me. The fact remains that it was about to be crushed and covered over in a couple of minutes, hey it was garbage. I would never stoop to the snakelike level of jeanyu and steal from a thrift store.
Some may gnash their teeth and say heathen--I say--come on--lighten up--it takes a good eye to realize a treasure among the trash. I think you missed the point jeanyu it's people like you that cause other people to just throw out their good useable stuff to the dump instead of donating to thrift stores. Hey I guess I now have my answer as to why people throw out this kind of stuff.
I donate alot of stuff to thrift stores, stuff that i've tried and failed several times to sell. I guess in the future I will have to physically take it inside of the
store rather than leaving it at the drop box, so that I can be assured that the thrift store will actually get it.

This has nothing to do with church, IMO.
I'm an atheist and I still know what's right and what's wrong.
Maybe in some locations the determining factor on illegality might be whether the item is IN the container or next to it, but as far as I'm concerned that doesn't make it ok. Legal or not, it's still highly unethical behavior. Not as Jeanyu puts it, "a matter of priorities" (principals maybe??)
"it takes a good eye to realize a treasure among the trash"
SO? How does that make it right??

Hi Maui--taking the role of trash dumpster Goodwill bin raider extrodeniere! Of course--what I wrote and what was understood are two entirely different things. So---going with this slithering slimy snake kind of thing. I know who I am and quite honest about it---if it makes others feel better to trash me---so friggin what!!! I just get a kick out of it all----- don't you dare take my trash. It's a hoot!
Ooh ooh ---edited to add--Yellowstone's reply that people will take their items to the dump rather than let other people pick their trash and maybe make a few dollars on it. Priceless reasoning.

Jeanyu..I just commented that I am surprised sometimes. Everyone has their own ideas of what is right or wrong or comfy versus uncomfortable. Myself, I drive by the Goodwill thing and see all those boxes out there stuffed with things I would dearly love to rifle thru. I just keep driving. It wasnt given to me. It was given to GW. But thats me. No offense meant to you.

I think that trash dumpster raiding and goodwill box raiding are 2 different things.
Of course--what I wrote and what was understood are two entirely different things If you can adequately explain jeanyu what this means then you may deserve an apology, otherwise I think I and everyone else read and understand what you wrote correctly.

A bit ago it was "treasures". Suddenly it's "trash". Which is it, Jeanyu?
Like I believe anyone would to to the trouble to take trash from the Goodwill. And then list it on eBay. Sure.
Oh, Yellowstone: sorry this has strayed so much from your original post. I applaud your taking things from the dump. That really was unwanted, and having saved it, you've left that much more room for real trash.

Yellowstone not looking for an apology--really. But this is what I wrote:
"That's what we do when we occasionaly donate to Goodwill or another donation booth. It's like Christmas! We leave our unwanted goodies and sorta kinda help ourselves to what others do not want that are outside on the curb--never inside a container."
Read--- OCCASIONALY--reality once! Geesh!
Get on with your perfect world and I'll sliver through mine, OK?
Would I do it again--in a heartbeat. Cause I know what I donated and what I retreived for reuse. It's sorta between me and the box---and I can live with it.

jeanyu, i'm sorry but I dont think that quite does it. Are you saying that you pick up and take stuff that has been donated to thrift stores even though it is not in the donation box? Or do you go thru the trash at thrift stores when you go to the thrift store to make a donation? One is trash and IMHO is ok to take and one is not, which is it with you?
edited to remove the word "dumpsters" to make my post easier to understand

Jeanyu-No one else here wants to call you what you are, so I will. Thief. Plain and simple. You and people like you are the reason I have to spend extra money hiring a guard to stay next to our drop box so that no one can pull up in the middle of the night and steal our donations. I have seen families take their children by their heals and put them in the drop box upside down to retrieve stuff out of our drop box. Makes me sick! And people wonder why some of the thrift stores are raising their prices, this is a perfectly good example. Jeanyu, do yourself and all the rest of us a favor and get some morals, what you did is stealing, nothing else.

A friend told me that the guy at the donation center informed her that he hates to see all the stuff outside the center when he comes in the morning and that she should help herself if she sees something she wants.
One day the guy left early as I was about to leave my stuff. A great whatchamacallit was there, so I grabbed it.
I started having all kinds of bad luck. I'm sure I was being punished for snagging that thingie. (see what years of Catholic school does).

If it is not stealing, then I am sure you do it in broad daylight while the Goodwill employees are watching?
Just wondering..
If you only sneak around and take stuff after dark or when no-one is around to see it, then, well...I won't say what I think.

In our area, the local TV investigative reporters stake out the various Goodwill boxes and secretly tape the people helping themselves. It's hilarious watching the culprits trying to explain their actions on the 6:00 news.
Just something to think about next time the box looks inviting.
thriftysalez, you may want to re-think your decision to hire that guard -- alot of the thieves were Goodwill employees.
