Whenever I have trouble with a flaky bidder or seller, it seems like they all live in small towns in Illinois.
The myth about "solid family values" in the heartland of America just doesn't ring true. The most reliable and honest folks are in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles.
Second runner up for flaky folks is another heartland state--Ohio. Not the big cities, of course, but the small towns.
I think I'll stay put in the big city so my children can learn some real values because it's been my experience that the value system of some small towns is warped.

I'm voting with you for Illinois. I once had a buyer from Illinois neg me for sending him something that was exactly as I described it in the auction. My response to his neg was "Lot is exactly as described in auction description." Oh well!

I really see no purpose to this thread other than putting others down. What will the follow up be? Do more men flake off on auctions than women (or vice versa)? Do humans that wear red underwear have more tendency to not pay their auctions? Or do cat-lovers make the worst buyers, since the cats eat the payments before buyers can mail them out??
Talk about generalizations! Let's NOT go there....

I agree with the person who complained about making generalizations.
Particularly as we have NO idea whether our so-called "flaky" difficult customers are actually real live human beings, or are merely attempts by misc.scum to sabotage our auctions and inflict financial and emotional damage on us.
There have been SO many reports of non-paying bidders of late, that I seriously wonder if these are actually some type of AUTOMATED PROGRAM developed by eBay competitors to DEMORALIZE eBay Sellers.
Legend also has it that plenty of Internet Pranksters also enjoy wreaking havoc in the lives and livlihoods of eBay Sellers.

Well I am in Illinois and none of my Illinois buyers are any real problem--and I don't think my sellers view me as a pain.
I'd say the biggest state problem is the "unknown" state where the bidders never respond and you just have to NPB them.

According to a Seller from back East, we, Californians, are supposedly leaders... I had to NEG that seller, who countered that by declaring in an Email, that we, on the West Coast, particularly Californians, collectively, belong to the wacco category...

Gee, I live in a tiny town right in the middle of Indiana -- which is smack dab between Illinois and Ohio, the two flakiest states. I guess that makes me a sandwich flake?
I had one real nutzoid buyer -- and funny that I can't remember where she lived! Somewhere in a little tiny town, I'm sure...

Actually, my "flakiest" buyer didn't live anywhere in the 50 US States at all. But, I'm sure if I mentioned his location, folks here would jump on me so fast it'd make your heads spin. It would be seen as just another XXXXX bashing thread.
Flakes come in all shapes and sizes, and also live all over this planet. If you sell online long enough, you'll come across one or two. If you haven't yet, just wait...you will.

Cooltom: You must not be talking the same part of Lower Moosylvania, because one seller there was the greatest, even tossing in some extra wintchyldunerwings in with the hellowackyertldoors I ordered. I'll take that kind of flaky any day.
Generally, those from Pteradonia and Betacon are somewhat terse, but have always proven reliable; while those from Otterstavia, Dogandcatdom, Lepidopteria and Upper Phumdum take a little longer but are friendly.
It was the seller from Altitudia that was rude, refusing to even give me their EOA notice. And here I had bid $50 on a book of jabberwocky that normally goes for $30. Go figure.
I can't say that reflects well on that state as a whole, but that's just my opinion.

Maybe a seller could include a statement in their TOS
Due to the high incident of problems I will not ship to -------
Everyone should be happy, they'd take their bids elsewhere and should another state have a high incident of problems you can just add that state to the TOS.
A side bonus would be the laughter that some would give your TOS, but laughter is a good thing.

I take exception to your statement. I've had a very high deadbeat ratio of buyers from Betacon. I can't believe our findings are so far off. This has given me reason to seriously doubt the rest of your claims.

I have sold my paintings and stuff in every state and a few outside of the US (even though my TOS distinctly states I only sell in the US.)
Small town or big city (I sell a lot of stuff in Manhattan, don't know why) I have the best customers. I get one deadbeat in maybe 150 sales. There are great people all over this country.

I love those flakey small towners from Illinois. I am flakey seller from a small town in TX and if it was not for those flakey small town buyers in Illinois I would not sell anything. They seem to love to buy from flakes in TX!

Gotta agree with Figmente- Australia-
Had an Aussie threaten to buy a plane ticket to come and kill me when he won an auction ($25.00) of mine that specifically said no foreign bidders (Big heavy item that couldn't be shipped reasonably) and I told him "sorry".

I will ship to Canada and Europe, but no more to the land down under.
Small towns in Oklahoma are a-ok but Dahlgren, Illinois, is the home of the nastiest, meanest bidder in eBay history.
Bidders from the South are so nice and polite, ditto for New Yorkers--they don't bite.
Chicago is great as the windy city, but that bidder from Dahlgren is just plain shi...

I really don't see any geographic differances
but The younger ones are quick to impute bad motives and use language that they would never dare face to face. And if they did they would be removing my thumb from their eyeball.
I have noticed that it is only the ladies who have tried a couple times to change the terms of sale after the auction has ended instead of negotiating before it ran out. Outright deadbeats it is about even.
