Hi! I'm new to ebay - selling and buying. I've listed some of my clothing and have people asking about the measurements of the clothing. OK, I'm not exactly sure how to go about measuring the clothing so that they can get an accurate fit. Can anyone give me some helpful tips and hints on how to measure clothing. I would greatly appreciate it!
It just shows which measurements though, not how to get them.
To get a bust or chest measurement, you have to measure all the way around the fabric at the correct spot. I usually start under the arms and go all the way around. If there are darts, then I start at the dart point and measure from there.
Sleeve length is measured from the shoulder hem to the cuff hem, on top of the arm. It gets tricky though if it's a drop sleeve or something like that.
I always include shoulder measurements on both men's and women's clothes. I have broad shoulders and long arms, for a female, and this can be one of the most difficult to fit on me.
Hips and waist are done the same as for the bust.
Men's neck size, I go from button to button hole.
you need a cloth tape measure to do this accurately. Metal construction types don't have enough give to correctly follow fabric.

This has always been a pet peeve of mine - clothing sellers that don't include measurements. Glad to see that you'll be including them.
When I measure clothes, I just lay them flat on the bed and measure from side to side. Bust/Chest, Waist, Hips and Length. If there's elastic somewhere (like the waist), measure it both stretched and unstretched. I explain that the measurements are 'lying-flat, side-to-side' and everyone seems to understand. I sometimes include the sleeve length and shoulders - depends on the item. Also include inseam (if pants) and shoulder-to-waistline (if it has a defined waist). If it's a dress, mention if it has walking slits and how long it is/they are.
Good luck. I'm sure you'll get more bids once you start including the measurements. I know that I back right out if there's no measurements.

Theresa F1: I'm selling a couple of jackets and have bought many. As far as those particular items go, the measurements I usually ask for are or that are given in the description are:
Shoulder - seam to seam
Sleeve - shoulder seam to end of cuff (some will measure under the armpit to cuff)
Chest - side seam to side seam (under the armpits), then double it for the total size
Length - top of shoulder (at seam) to bottom of item
