I'm a high volume sunglass seller on eBay and we have had our worst month in our 3 years selling on the site. We've do nothing different, but have seen our sales slump to unchartered levels.
Are we dealing with poor sit operation or a lack of buyers? Your opinions, please...

IMHO if you are selling high priced sunglasses, the problem could be the economy, etc, if you sell low end priced, i have no idea, sorry.

It's the economy!
When the “future’s so bright, you have to wear shades” you were probably doing well.
This may be an early leading indicator that we’re about to go in the crapper!

I do think that bidding is off. I wouldn't blame the site too much.

My sales are down BADLY because eBah has had problems every night I've had things closing over the past three weeks. They've credited me with two nights so far, but the damage is done by that point.
Not blame the site? I blame the site 100%.
I've started moving my stuff over to Yahoo.
EBah may have a bigger following, but what good is it if it can't stay on-line?

WEll Gezzz here we are Mid fall and sales on sunglasses are down.
Go figure maybe thats why most retailers are focusing on holidays and winter fashions right now sun glasses arent on there big seller list right now either.
you should try aiming sales toword australia right now I understand sunglass sales are up there they are about mid spring right now.

October has also been my worst month on record after doing great for almost three years. Like you, I have done nothing different. It's just like all the buying dried up on my auctions over the past few weeks. Lots of lookers, but not many buyers. Could be election jitters, recessions approaching, or something else. It's just strange the way it hit so fast and so hard.

Sales this year are off incredibly.
I sell Action Figures and Toys and last year I couldn't keep the stuff in stock...
One thing I also notice this year is that the traditional retailers have A LOT of inventory on things they usually run short on...
As far as Ebay goes...sales are down and quality sales are non-existent. I have to practically give stuff away in order to get bids...and the amount of deadbeats is sky high (and ebay does nothing to help here!)
I have made a decision to move on to YAHOO for most of my auctions...it is different selling there...more relaxed and I find the bidders are nicer...I am selling more items at a better price on Yahoo now than I have in the last 3 months on Ebay...plus I keep all of the profit...NO FEES!

I am hearing a lot of other sellers in various areas say the same thing you are too.
One of the first guys to post items in the category's I do.In fact he was the first there has or is thinking about giving it up.
He has good feedback is well liked but he say's not worth the time and effort.
I have seen such a drop myself for no real reason either.I am finding that most bidding takes place in the last hour and if ebaY is down then that kills it.You get a lot of that then it really hurts.
I am seeing items sell for less on ebaY than they do at the various auctions I buy at throughout Europe.Yes prices are going up at these sales and ebaY goes down.I have no idea why.
I had a good run the last 10 days but I may still give this up as a full time job by Jan.
I am trying new areas or old areas that did really well over a year ago but it looks like the high end bidders I need are all gone for the most part.
I have had some old bidders pop back up and gotten some good prices too from them.I thought they had all gone for good but apparently not.
I think the stock market has a lot to do with it,more than we think.Oil prices do not help eaither.Back too the stock market with the fall out of the dot.com's a lot people who thought they had a lot of money find out they do not.
Election is another thing and I truly believe by what I can see worldwide that we are in for a global recession.
I think the start of which we are seeing here.

It is definitely ebay problems on the hit/side - as for the bidding- It's not so good on any site since September. We may have become an indicator for the stock market???
Also -- IMHO, many bidders have now become sellers!! It's crowded out there....leaving us the international market to romance a little stronger, methinks. I've noticed my highest sales come from Japan and other countries...Only the richer foreigners seem to have computers???

Sigh. I have to go back to the hospital PRN because my sales have dropped and I still have to make that car payment - along with other bills. I've put it off as long as I could.
I think the eBay problems are a large part of it. I do believe they could have handled this "upgrade" better with respect to us sellers. And Presidential Elections have always caused fluctuations like this. I just hope it is temporary and things will be better after the elections are over and ebay gets their work done. But you never know.
Oh, and by the way - I buy sunglasses all year round - in fact, I need them more in the winter.

Potential just means you haven't done it yet!

Thank you all for your opinions and insights to the lack of eBay activity problem we were experiencing. It is appreciated.
Low an behold, bids have again started coming in, which means that the lack of activity was attributed to the site problems. While sales are not great, they're starting to pick up. We're looking for the holiday season to again be great this year! Believe it or not, we sell more sunglasses in Nov-Jan than we do in Jun-Aug. The fact is that the sun is a greater problem in the winter for drivers than it is in the summer. The sunglasses are also nice gifts for folks to give at the holidays.
I hope you all are also experiencing a rise in activity.
Regards,
AH
