I just got a very nice card tonight for $405, that sold on ebay last night for over $800. Same card, same grade, same everything. This card has never sold under $640 in this grade in the last 3 weeks on ebay and often much higher.
2 snipers came on in the last 2 minutes. One obviously bid his limit, the other spent the 2 minutes trying to locate my proxy amount until his time ran out. Why didn't he just bid his maximum and probably beat me by $5? I don't know, guess sniping is just more fun even when you lose?
On the other hand maybe bidders still don't understand the proxy system?

"maybe bidders still don't understand the proxy system?"
Many don't. Every auction I've lost was because someone offered more than I was willing to pay. If they think the timing on when they offered it has something to do with it they are wrong.

And dutch auctions confuse even the ones who DO understand proxy bidding but don't know eBay does not do it for Dutch. I have people bid twice my opening bid with no other bidders on board.

That thought did cross my mind, doc.But looking at the bid records,I don't think so. A shill would want to give me time to bid again,I think,in the event he hit my proxy.

Of course, if you would have put your bid in with, say, 10 seconds to go, the person who placed multiple bids would not have had the opportunity to do so, and you would have gotten it for even less...
