Brighid tells me you're the expert on selling on Amazon.com. I'm listing some books. I have a question about this: I searched for a 1966 book. Amazon has three listings, all out of print. There is no (sell your item) button. The message on the page says "Out of Print, Try our Out of Print Search Service." Can't find this anywhere--do you have a clue for me?

I'm having pretty good luck listing my books but find Amazon a bit tough to navigate. Just don't have the hang of it yet! Thanks in advance.

I just tried answering this, but it didn't seem to take. I've been able to list copies on several out of print records, so I am not sure why their "sell yours" button didn't show up. If you want to discuss specific titles you can email me at: [email protected].

I sold one just yesterday that I put on an "out of stock" record, for example.

If you can find the "sell yours" link elsewhere on Amazon, you should be able to find a place where you can type in the ISBN number of the book.

The Person Reborn, by Paul Tournier (no ISBN number on dustjacket!), Black English, by J.L.Dillard.

Amazon only has Black English listed as a paperback--mine is hardcover, great dust jacket. I tried putting it in anyway and got a message that they couldn't list it--'maintenance' going on, try again later.

So. . . is there a way to go directly to the Rare Book Search part of Amazon? And where in the heck IS it???? (Can you tell I'm frustrated? They keep urging us folks to try it and I cannot find it.

If I have a hardcover and they only list a paperback, what can I do then? Is it not a rarer book or even a collectible at that point?

Roadsmith -

"Amazon only has Black English listed as a paperback--mine is hardcover, great dust jacket. I tried putting it in anyway and got a message that they couldn't list it--'maintenance' going on, try again later. "

That was probably just maintenance, they seem to be up now. I found "Lexicon of Black English" listed as OP, is that what you have?

"So. . . is there a way to go directly to the Rare Book Search part of Amazon? And where in the heck IS it???? (Can you tell I'm frustrated? They keep urging us folks to try it and I cannot find it. "

When I clicked on the link for OP search, I got info about how they do it. Amazon says they query out of print sellers. I don't know who they are, maybe rare book dealers on the web. I don't know for sure, but I don't think just anyone can list under that feature.

You could list under the paperback copy and say in your annotation that you have the HC edition. I am leery of this right now. I think Amazon wants the items listed to be exactly like their entries, same ISBN, etc.

"Is it not a rarer book or even a collectible at that point?"

They seem to equate "out of print" with collectible, so you could use their pricing structure if you want. There's nothing inherently valuable about an OP book, hardcover, or anything. Searching the various book sites on the Web (including eBay) will give you an idea about rarity and value.

Good luck! I had 3 sales already today!

If you do this, be aware that Amazon will limit the price you can ask for your hardcover book to 80% of the price they'd ask for the paperback version. I've done this once (in my very limited use of the Amazon service) and I'm thinking about pulling my hardcopy because I had to price it so low.

If you say it is "collectible" instead of "used" you have to price it higher than Amazon.

Thanks, all of you. I actually think I'm getting the hang of it. I am however surprised by how many times they've said they're in "maintenance" today.

Black English is not the same as the Lexicon, Keziak. I'm still trying to list this book but most of the others are going through just fine.

So, one other question: In a box of books at auction ($1 for the whole box--I love it!), there was a Swedish cookbook (in Swedish language), "Hemmets Kokbok," 1909 printing. Cover has seen use but has a charming full-color young lass on it. Am I correct in assuming there's no way to sell this on Amazon?

And thanks again for all your good advice. I looooove this site. Adele

The rare and used books link on Amazon is a direct link to booksellers on their zShops. The rare link takes you to a search on the "rare" category book listings on zShop; the used link goes to the used books (excluding rare) on zShops.

All items listed on Amazon's marketplace are in the Zshops, but not all zShops listings are part of the marketplace. I use zShops to list older books and use the crosslinks to get hose on Amazon's retail pages.

Not true.Unless something has drastically changed, in order to have a zShop you must pay the $39.99 per month. People who are only listing on the marketplace for free, do not have a zShop.

Well, Murph--this just goes on and on! Nowhere can I see in any of Amazon's pages any sort of link to rare books! Where exactly is the little goodie?

valeriet--

Yep, it looks like you're right. I thought that since my Marketplace items showed up in zShops searches that all Marketplace items would. Just did an experiment and found that I was mistaken. Just as an aside, I didn't think that folks who are not Pro Merchants actually had a zShops, just that their listings would show up in zShops searches.

Roadsmith--Go to the Books tab in Amazon. On the left side of your screen, directly under the search box is a longer box with the heading "BROWSE". Go about half way down in that box--there you will find a clickable link titled "Rare and Used Books."

Adele - About your Swedish cookbook, I would put that one on ebay. I haven't sold a lot of foreign language material, but when I have, I've met folks who are specifically looking for something along the lines of what I have. You might get an international buyer for that matter. It sounds like a cute item.

Murph: Thanks so much. I've found it. And now I've e-mailed Amazon to ask just how I can sell at that site. Is it just me, or is it not easy to find what they want me to know? I'm not a stupid person! (I think.)

And Keziak, your advice about selling the cookbook (Kokbok ) on eBay sounds good.

You are all so helpful. It's terrific.

To sell on zShops, just sign up and pay $39.99 a month. Then your books will appear in the rare & used books section.
