Does anyone know? I have several british magazines I would love to put up for auction but they are quite heavy, and would be pricey to ship by weight. Thanks.

No, it's because of the advertising in them. I called the 1-800 number for USPS and that's what they said.

There's a special category for them called "printed matter". The rates are based on zone rates. It's a bit higher than book but cheaper than 1st & priority.

fonze is right -- nothing which contains advertising can be shipped book rate. Some people fudge it, though.

I wonder if older magazines where the advertisements are clearly out of date (and thus no longer really valid as advertisements ) could be shipped book rate?

Nope, even old mags can't be shipped bookrate. I've been round and round with them about it.

It's weird though....

Most books have advertising in them now.

And almost ALL videotapes do.

Heck, some of them ARE advertising.

But they are OK to send bookrate.

You can send a videotape filled with nothing but ads via bookrate, but you can't send a 40 year old magazine.

Such is the post office!

Oooops! I just mailed three food magazines to my daughter, book rate. Cuff me and haul me off, deputy.

Just didn't know. . . . but do now. Doesn't make sense, though.

Hi. I buy a lot of magazines and also sell some. Bound Printed Matter is the class mail magazines are officially sent by, but most people and the post offices refer to it as book rate. There was a great thread on eBay Outlook that I use as a reference and to answer this question. It was posted March 19th with the title of Shipping?:Book Rate. I saved it, so I tried to go to my filing cabinet and copy and paste here and for some reason I couldn't. I don't know if messages that old are still stored here on e-bay Outlook but it would be worth reading. By the way I went to the USPS site and read that with the new rate change this rate will be called Media Rate. Hope this helps.

I send magazines book rate all the time but I carefully cut out all the ads first.

Seriously though, an old magazine is a collectible. The ads aren't current and I doubt if that's what this rule of "No Advertising" being sent book rate was intended to cover.

I send magazines book rate all the time with no troubles.
