I have a buyer, sent an EOA notice. Requested shipping address - everything standard.
She posts back with her address and this:
>>"I will be sending a money order today. Do not send any
advertising materials to my e-mail or home!!!!">>>
Customarily, I would reply to this post to thank the buyer for responding and tell them I would be posting again to advise I got their payment and had shipped, but I am afraid to answer this post.
What do you think is the deal?
She is buying something that would be a Christmas present for a child (old enough to navigate a computer) and so it has occurred to me that she is deleting all trace or the deal to preserve a surprise.
A more paranoid part of me thinks..
Well. It thinks more paranoid things.
In whatever case I am now afraid to email her. What do you think is the deal? I hope it goes without saying that I do not spam anyone ever under any circumstances. I do put a business card (thanks) in with packages. Do you think she means this would be offensive.
I am befuddled.
Don't get me wrong, I am happy for the sale and the paying buyer. I just want to do my job right, and not thanking a buyer is not my style.

It sounds to me like this buyer has either been spammed or junk mailed or both by a previous seller.
She also could be the type that has read all the scare stories on the news about dealing with people you meet on the internet. I personally would assure her that you never send junk snail mail or email to any of your buyers unless they request to be notified of future listings.

I would just email her and ask her what she means by that statement - and let her know that I am just an individual selling some things on ebay - and that I do not spam or send junk mail. Maybe she thinks she has been put on a mailing list?
Whatever her reason, she could have been a little nicer about it!

It could mean that she gets a ton of SPAM from eBay "sounding" addresses (I do everytime I complete an auction). If you believe it may be her way of hiding what she has purchased, could you not thank her without making reference to the auction?

I think it is time you shatter her/his (pointless) paranoia.
Sign up their e-mail to "inapproaite" mailing lists. Find a dead animal on the street and send it to their address.
Of course, I AM JOKING!

Okay, good.
Then it is weird.
That's what I thought, so I am glad it is *it* and not *me*!

I recently had a buyer who bought a movie with the word GAY in the title. He sent an email to me requesting I not leave feedback as his was a family computer and he did not want to be linked to that auction.
I replied to him using another email address and just said "all is well" and used only part of my eBay name.
He was quite happy with that.

VeryModern: I think, like Meya, that your customer has been spammed. In this case, I would leave feedback Something like Shipped on date, thanks, and so on the day I shipped.

Okay, maybe it's me but my impression reading that is that she doesn't want any spam online or off. Period.
I don't understand why you'd be afraid to tell her that her package shipped. She asked you not to send "advertising" materials. A notice of shipment is not advertising.
Not Kerryann on eBay

I've generally found that a calm and perhaps slightly informal to humorous inquiry when an online "puzzle" arises is a good approach. I'd email her being careful to phrase it so there's no clue to the item bought and tell her just what the puzzle is... that you understand the spam concern and certainly never do that stuff, but that you'd like to leave feedback in the Ebay system but that it also occurs to you that she might be concealing a gift's identity from a family member, hence the "mysterious" tone to your email.

Well judging by everyone's interpretation, it seems it really is a puzzle.
I think I will err on the side of caution and just leave fb that includes the word "Thanks" and then ship pronto. She happens to live nearby and should get her package overnight and never be bothered by me again!
