I recently had a buyer who did not want to pay $3.20 priority shipping. I told her upfront I could ship it for $2.50 s/h.

I received a nasty email today complaining that I was dishonest. The postage was $1.47 but I charged her $2.50.

I had to purchase a special envelope at $1.00 plus added insurance. I lost money on shipping.

I did email the buyer back explaining about the envelope and insurance, but I'm still furious that I was called a liar and a cheat when I went out of my way to save her priority shipping costs.

I learned my lesson. No good deed goes unpunished.

I would probably write to her and tell her just how far my dishonesty goes! My buying of the original product, my listing , taking pics of the product, my listing fees, my final value fees, my materials, my getting it to the post office costs money because in our part of the country we don't have free gas, my time! Tell her she is lucky you did not send it in a piano crate! grrrrrr people sometimes!!

I am getting SO SO tired of hearing about people getting their knickers in a knot over shipping charges.

Tell them to shop at L.L. Bean and complain to them when the shipping charge is $10.00

The appropriate response is "The $2.50 charge covered the cost of shipping materials and postage. The $3.20 charge also included the cost of shipping materials." Then ignore her.

Sorry, furkidmom, but your suggestion will sound like nothing but a seller whining about how tough she has it. Moreover one would assume that your investment in the item, time taking pix, shipping and packing, listing and FVFs, and gas were covered by the HIGH BID on the item, not by handling charges.

Don't feel bad. I sold a vintage radio magazine to a buyer with my TOS stating it would be shipped Priority Mail for $3.20. The first part of his reply was his bragging about how he just spent nearly $100,000 for an antique radio collection. The second part was his moaning and groaning over the $3.20 shipping cost. Aaaargh!

I post shipping/handling charges in the posting. If they don't like the amount, then they shouldn't bid. I don't debate. When you bid on an item, you are agreeing to all the stated conditions of sale.

I like HCQ response. I will plagerize you should I receive any more complaints.

It's easy to resolve her complaints. Tell her that you will refund her purchase price but she will have to place the item in a new envelope and return it to you with insurance included. I guess she'd then know how much it really cost.

You think that is funny. I mailed out a package last week via Priority Mail. I had some stamps and $1.75 with meter strips (not enough stamps).

This retards e-mails me and tells me I am scamming him because I didn't mail Priority Mail and that he poaid me for Priority Mail and he says I only paid shipping of $1.75. This guy must either be really stupid or stupid because the package had Priorty Tape & stamp written/taped all over it. Also I always thought stamps cost money too but obviously I was wrong.

Sorry for going anal but hey sometimes you got to call it as you see it. There are a lot of weird people out there.

Priority mail is the same as 1st class - anything over 8 ounces jumps to $3.20 and is called priority mail. Everything really goes 1st class. So calling it "priority mail" is just a way for the post office to make more money. Anyway I am pretty happy with the post office.

I just charge $4 - $3.20 for priority mail and then I insure it for $1.25 with U-Pic so I don't have to go to the post office. So I eat the amount over the $4. If I send lingerie, I note that shipping fee is only $2. Am thinking of just charging a flat $2 for shipping and handling is item is over $10. What do you think?

Once on this certain item that I knew the postage would be pretty high due to the large/odd size of the item, I put the s/h in the listing (which I normally don't do). I didn't want any shock to the buyer. My EOA email stated the total. The mean response almost made me void the sale. He said the shipping is too high and if I didn't lower the shipping, he'd report me to Safe Harbor. This is after the auction ended! I told him ok, I'll lower the s/h cost, but the packaging would be subpar (meaning, the item wouldn't be protected other than a box). He agreed, I shipped the item as mentioned, and I lost a couple bucks on the whole deal. But, of course losses, like every business operates, are passed onto the next guy.

You want to talk about cheap? I had a buyer whose shipping was $3.15 and she DIDN'T want to pay the extra $0.05 to have it sent Priority. This even after I explained the chances of her getting the item in one piece and in under a month was better if she was to pay the extra $0.05 and have it sent Priority. No go! It was a breakable item and she also refused the $0.85 for insurance. Oh, well, at least I kept all our emails just in case it never arrives or arrives broken. . .

I bought an item and was told to send 4.00 priority shipping and 1.50 for ins. ????
The item cost 3.20 to ship, and ins. should be 0.85 I contacted the seller and asked why if it is priority mail and insured for 20.00 are you chargeing me more.
He said, in a return email. Hi Trouble, I list over 100 items a week and to make it easer for me I charge a flat rate for all the items, so what is your problem, that was his reply.
I wrote him and said, "I don't appreciate being addressed as "Hi Trouble" and I just asked you a simple question, My check is in the mail and I did include the shipping price and ins. you wanted, but I just wanted to let you know, You should state in you listing what YOUR rules are, and if you want to make extra money, just charge for handling and packing material don't think that people don't know what you are doing.
You are making a profit on shipping costs.
He is making $ 1.45 on each item x 1000 items.........Is that what we all should do as seller???????

Excessive shipping is the online shaver shop that charges $8.00 s/h to send a less than one ounce shaver screen.

I was about to order some items from etoys and was shocked at the shipping and handling they charge in addition to sales tax, even though they are based in another state.

I don't think that a lot of these people have ever purchased anything via mailorder..

Please include $6.95 shipping and handling [for a couple of cds] and allow 4 to 6 weeks for delivery...

Or are people just spoiled by Ebay sellers that bend over backward and turn cartweels to please their customers, lose money on shipping, ship the same day, ect....

The way I figure it I have been paying inflated S/H charges for the past 40 years of mail order buying. Now that I'm on the receiving end I'm not changing the rules.

I charge $3.95 non negotiable. My actual cost is $0.55 postage plus $0.14 for the box. I use small boxes and I self insure. If I get a complaint (rare) I send a list of S/H expenses that totals about $10. (I used to be a defense contracter so I am en expert at justifying these types of costs.)

I just completed a transaction. I was higher bidder on a ring. The seller charged $7.00 for insured S&H. The ring arrived in a wrinkled up plain envelope with 44 cents postage on it and the ring was bent. The sellers refund policy states that S&H is non-refundable and there is a 10% restocking fee on any returns. What's the point of saying insured S&H if they don't package properly or honor their insurance? I guess they self insure so that the post office can't refuse a claim based on their awful packaging.
I have decided to write this off as a bad experience and make sure that I never bid on this persons auctions again. I sell and buy on several different auction sites so I know how to package.

I wouldnt worry too much about it. You told the buyer that you're charging $2.50 for shipping AND handling. So, with $1.47 shipping, that leaves a little over $1.00 for your troubles.

But, let me tell you a bad shipping horror story. I purchased two of the same item from a seller on yahoo auction. His stated shipping and handling cost was $6.00 and when I asked him if he could combine shipping, he flattly said no, because he would ship the items seperatly. When the items came, they were in the same box and shipping was just $3.20. After e-mailing him an angry e-mail, he sent me a very very small refund. THAT was definitely a shipping rip off...your shipping cost was not even that bad.

Postage . The only time I had problems was with buyers from the pacific rim that would argue with me about 50 cents. But since Ebay opened in so many countries they resolved that for me as i rarely have any international buyers any more. The more they diversify the more it gets screwed up. Lately I have more success on Ebay owned half com. At least I get steady business. Hey the next time someone complains toss thier item in a used pizza box with Duct tape. Don't bother to clean out the pizza crumbs. No. just a joke.. Or hey how about a brown paper bag from the grocery store? with corn stalk trash in it from husking the corn? Then we do not have to charge for materials. In all honesty I put all my charges on the auction description offering them in most cases either priority for $3.20 0r regular mail for $2.50. If its a expensive item I usually send it priority anyway regardless of what they give me. I love those free boxes!
