I just received an email from a buyer who says he sent a money order for $15 to much. M.O has been received and the item has been shipped already. I'm pretty sure the m.o was for the correct amount but honestly cannot say for fact. How would you handle this???

Ask for a photo copy of the MO and then check your deposits. That should be enough to tell you they sent one for over the amount. If they can't give you a copy, then maybe you can check your deposits at your bank, But I wouldn't refund until you have some verification.

I'd ask the buyer how he knew the MO was for $15 too much. Either he's got a copy of the MO (which he can send you), or he's relying on his memory - which if he actually was so daffy as to obtain a MO for more than the amount due, is pretty questionable.

Ask your bank to scan your latest deposits...Don't you keep a record of your deposit slips????

I photocopy every item I deposit just for things like this.

Although it would be useful (to seller) if the seller had indeed kept a copy of buyer's payment, I'd suggest that the burden is on the buyer to prove that his claim is true.

Buyer sent m.o # so I can have the bank look it up. Thanks for all the advice.

If he has his original receipt, he can verify with the company from which he purchased the money order, and then send you a copy for verification.

I had a buyer claim the same thing a few months ago after I had already cashed check. I told her I would be happy to refund the difference when I received a copy of cancelled check. Never heard from her again.
