I sold two designer sweaters, brand new, untouched, still wrapped in manufacturer's packaging. The buyer won one on eBay and purchased an additional one in another color off eBay. Same size.

He emails me teling me that the navy sweater is much smaller than the gray sweater, even though they are the same size. Also, it is much smaller than the other sweaters he has same type, same designer.

Before he gets an email authorizing tthe return, he sends it back. My TOS states no returns, but if I send out a defective item, I take it back.

I received it Saturday, opened it today and it is not the sweater I sent. It is very similar except it looks as though it was worn and washed and suffered considerable shrinkage. It is so much smaller than the ones I have that I cannot believe that this is the same sweater I sent out. Also, it is a little thicker than the ones I have (that are still in the packaging) but I cannot tell if that's because of the washing.

The sweater is 100% lambswool and the one I received is all "nubbly" like it was thrown in the washer.

How do I handle this? Also the buyer paid by PapPal and with all the talk that has been going on lately, I don't want him to wreak havoc with my PayPal account.

Thanks in advance

"How would I handle this?" and "How would I handle this if the customer paid by Paypal?" are two very different questions.

In general, if I was sure the item returned was different, I would take a firm but apologetic tone: "I'm sorry, but it appears you returned the wrong item."

If the buyer paid by Paypal, well ... you know the old joke about put your head between your legs and kiss your butt goodbye? You might anticipate the bidder by going to Paypal and sounding them out on this one.

Another good argument for marking your items!!! You can always e-mail him and tell him that you mark your items with an invisible mark, and the item returned does not have the mark, so he must have returned the wrong item in error. See what happens. People do often switch items and those that do are very dishonest. I guess you have to weigh the pros and cons of a possible Paypal problem. Is losing the money and the item worth a possible paypal hassle?

Definitely get in contact with PayPal about this situation before doing anything.

It may be that some folks are using the PayPal method as a means of exacting additional leverage on the seller when trying the old switcheroo.
