I was looking at some auctions this morning, and came across one with this note (paraphrased- this is not the actual text) above the image:
Note: Lighting often reflects some strange colors off shiny widgets. Widget is gold colored as it is supposed to be. Widget photo is larger than the actual widget. Photo process sometimes could cause distortion in the image and adds colors to the widget. With xxxxx, the widget you see is the widget you get.
the widget you see is the widget you get?????
With all the disclaimers concerning the accuracy of the image, how could one have any confidence at all in what they were going to receive?
It just struck me as kind of funny that anyone would go to the trouble of taking a picture and including it in their listing, only to write a short paragraph describing how inaccurate the picture really is.

The seller may have had problems with past buyers, and due to the fact that every monitor will vary from slightly to greatly in color management, they probably just want to forgo the "It didn't look that color in your picture" problem after shipping.

You're probably right.
I don't know- maybe it's just me, but it just struck me as funny to write 4 sentences about how the picture could be inaccurate, and then finish with "what you see is what you get".

"With xxxxx, the widget you see is the widget you get."
I would take that to mean that this seller puts the picture of the actual item he will be sending you..not just a generic picture of a similar widget. He wants you to know the widget your going to get is the one in the photo.
As for the rest...some things are difficult to photograph and do show reflections. It may be he frequently gets questions on this and is just answering them first...kind of a preemptive strike!
I didn't mean this to be critical- it just seemed odd to me to say "what you see is what you get" about a picture that may not look like what you get. I guess it is just me...
