Anyone know this mark?
It says hand chased...has a crown...and in boxes the letters S then G (and one more I cannot make out) and then crossed bones (I think).

It is on a large Tea Service about 50 years old.
Thanks for any help...

I'm sorry I am unable to help you with the mark but you may find it here?

I have looked in some of my books and the only mark I can find is Simeon & George Rogers Company. They show some silver but not the mark. If the 3rd letter is an "R" maybe that is it? Good luck with it, maybe some of the other silver collectors will see this.

So is that company now Oneida? Hmm. Maybe. I did not think these types of marks were American.

This looks suspiciously like a Stanley Gordon mark, Stanley Gordon was a small silversmith and brassmith in Essex, UK, from about 1934-51, not much is known about him, since there are few records, at least that I have in my reference section. The crown is SLIGHTLY different, but the 4 symbols read "S", "G", "C", and a "star". The "C" was for an international copyright on the name. I may be incorrect, metalware is not my speciality, hence my reference library. I would be interested to see the designs and patterns on the teapot, and the handles on cream and sugar set. Hope this helps.

The crown IS different, but from what I can see, this is what I would mark it up as. Believe me, you throw it on ebay in the silverplate section, you'll find out very quickly what it really is.

Pnth,
The words Hand Chased are on several pieces.
Here is another pic ...

Hi Zeena,

I agree with pnth. This mark looks English possibly 20th Century Sheffield.

I sell mostly in the Silverplate category and buyers seem to be less interested in the mark than the item. There are a few collectors but not many. I've placed items with good marks from great makers with not so much as a nibble but a thinly silvered tea set from Wm. Rogers or Oneida sells quickly.

When I come across an interesting item with a mark like Mappin & Webb, I keep it for my own collection because I will be giving it away by listing it on ebay.

I would list the item in HollowWare and General and in the title space as "English(?)Tea Service etc." In the description space describe the design attributes well and include an impression of the mark (candle soot, then tape over, remove tape and place on paper then scan) as well as your photo image of the mark. This should cover your bases while providing info for all types of buyers or collectors. Good Luck! It should do well especially if there is a tray with the set. Monifa
