I have a buyer upset with me over the quality of her item. This "widget" is something I have sold for a while now. I have sold at least 30 of these and every single one is exactly the same. Everyone who has bought one from me has left me a positive feedback and all had nothing but praise for this particular "widget".

Now all of a sudden this buyer tells me it is not of the high quality she expected it to be and is pointing out every single flaw or imprefection no matter how minute.

This "widget" is hand made and of a rustic style of work and is described as so.

Anyway, she says she wants 1/3 of her total payment back because the item did not meet her standards.

I offered a complete refund if she sent the item back, but she said no, she wants only a third back and she wants to keep the item or she will neg me.

WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO HERE ????

Just tell her sorry---a full refund is the only way that you will resolve her problem

---let her neg and put a rebuttal explanation following her neg that she refused your offer.

cix, I would explain that what she has proposed to do is feedback extortion and that I was forwarding that email to safeharbor. She just wants a deep discount. I kind of wonder how often she does this type of thing?

We took a neg one time over the same kind of thing, buyer refused a full refund (including shipping) but wanted 50 % of their money back. No way would I do this. I don't know what your feedback rating is, but one neg out of a couple of hundred positives (with a responce) will let the pin heads know you won't take certain kinds of crap.

Microbes makes an excellent point-if she negs because she didn't get her way, you can use that neg to your advatage. Just state the facts. "Buyer refused full refund offered."

If the item is so far below her "standards" why does she want to keep it at all? It is extortion, and I would forward it to safeharbor.

I would be more explicit than Grumps, so other buyers are completely informed of your position on partial refunds: "Demanded partial refund, refused to return item for full refund."

If the buyer's feedback indicates that this is an ongoing problem with her, I'd leave the same comment as negative feedback in her profile, but only after she's negged you. I'm not advocating retaliation here, but only that you needn't risk her retaliating on you, if she didn't intend to neg you in the first place. If you're willing to risk it, you might even leave this as a neutral whether she negs you initially or not.

I realize this has been said multiple times in this thread, however, REPORT this to safeharbor immediately. I, too, would let the buyer know that this type of extortion is not permitted by eBay and that you will be forwarding all e-mails regarding this transaction to them.

If she negs you, respond with a cool, concise and factual response and believe me, anyone who cares will know who the "pin head" was in the transaction.

Report it to Safeharbor with CC to her. Also, it may be to your advantage to inform her that not only is it feedback extortion, but is also criminal extortion. She wants money from you to not ruin your reputation. Maybe it's not threat of physical harm or burning down your house/business, but it is just the same.

What a sneaking way to get a discount. What everyone else said.

I had a similiar experience and I demanded a return of the item and I would pay for the shipping both ways, and when the person hesitated I offered to drive to his home, 300 miles away and pay him and pick up the item. He then decided to keep the item and never left feedback. Go figure. You can't please everybody.
