I placed a bid on what appeared to be a beautiful quality piece of jewelry - a very good deal at that! There is a 3 day guarantee on this particular piece, and I truly question the authenticity. One of the question I want to ask is, does Swarovski crystal come with the gold foiling on the back or is it always crystal clear throughout? Secondly, how can I test for gold material? I would appreciate a response to this question. Thanks!

I am really disappointed with what I purchased and add insult to injury, I had to pay Priority mail, which I was told actual shipping (ouch!!!). Wish they would have been upfront about requiring Priority, especially this vendor is 20 miles away from me.

Swarovski RHINESTONES are often foiled on the back--it adds to their glitter.

to test for gold, you need a gold testing kit. If you want to give me more info privately on this transaction, you can email me at [email protected] and I can look at the auction for you. I make and sell jewelry, so I know a bit about what I am talking about here.

The foil on the back of the crystal use to be called 'Aurorais Borealis'--it increases the sparkle and changes the colour of the prism colours when light is refracted through it. Without the backing the crystal is just clear

why not go to their site and poke around--maybe you can find an answer there or write to them

The Swarovski crystal necklace and earring sets and also the bracelets that we sell in our shop have the stones set with claws into a rhodium setting so the back of the stone can not be seen.

This is the only way that I have ever seen the Swarovski crystal jewelry done but maybe that is just the items we sell.

Thank you everyone for the responses.

isworeiwouldneverdothis: Thank you for responding to my emails privately and looking over the auction in question.

Zazzie: Thank you. Excellent suggestion! I wrote. Let's see if it's worth their time to respond .

shaani: Are the items that you sell genuine Swarovski jewelry or crystals? The piece of jewelry stated "Swarovski Crystal" 14kt gold over sterling silver and shows no marks of metal type.

This item just appears to be a cheap costume jewelry. Is there a way to test for gold too? Thanks everyone.

Hi avmom,

The items we sell are marked on a card "Genuine Swarovski Crystal". As I understand it, different companies can buy the genuine stones and put them in their jewelry designs but maybe I am wrong?

There is also "austrian crystal" and some of this can be put in very good rhodium settings or very cheap settings. We have seen it both ways.

Are your stones mounted in the setting with claws or just glued in? Also if it is 14kt gold plated over sterling it should be marked as such somewhere on the clasp or setting. It should be marked 925 for sterling and then 14k GP I would think.

Hopefully a jewelry expert will be able to help you on this.

Is it possible it was made in China?

Do the stones look well cut? Or are they not evenly faceted?

China is producing crystal now, and most of it is shoddy stuff with little sparkle.

I use genuine Swarovski crystal in a lot of my earrings and jewelry. the difference is imemdiate.
