I got one, too, for $8.10 last week. My account also was empty, and there was no indication with the check or on my account page as to why they sent this. Maybe a rebate for using the service actively?

Did you post auctions at GoTo when they were refunding the listing fees??

Was it the balance you had in an X.com checking account? They just closed all of these, and refunded the balances by check.

I got one too and assumed that it was the balance in the X.com account. It sure would have been nice if they had made some type of memo notation on the check stub!

Hi there,
I got one for nine cents, and thought it was probably the balance of that High Interest (.5%) that was due to zero out the account. Would the $12.00 one be a refund of a service charge? (The one that was charged if your balance goes below $100.)

I just got a $12.00 check also, and I had complained to x.com about the LAME excuse of a service charge they put on my account less than a month before closing. Neither my sister nor I received an email from them warning of this "service charge", and I called the "customer service" number and complained that it was pretty shady dealings for a FDIC insured bank. Were the others who received checks x.com members?

I got my $7.77 check today. I believe it was definitely a check from X.com because I received an email from them a few weeks ago stating they would be closing all checking accounts and sending out remainder balances. Here is an excerpt from that email:

"Dear X.com/First Western National Bank Account Holder,

As a reminder, X.com will cease operation of the X Finance business,
including the Internet banking division of First Western National Bank
("FWNB", as of December 1, 2000. Please close your FWNB account by
following the instructions at
https://secure.finance.x.com/account_closure.asp. Accounts not closed by
December 1, 2000 will be closed by us on that date and the balance mailed
by check to the most recent address that you have provided. Accounts not
closed by December 1, 2000 that had an average balance of $100 or less
during the month of November will be assessed the standard $12 monthly
maintenance fee. After December 1, 2000, no items presented for payment
will be accepted, including checks, electronic funds transfer requests and
debit card transactions.

It is particularly important that you immediately arrange for transfer of
any direct deposits or automatic electronic funds withdrawals (such as
bill payment) that you may have attached to your account. Although we will
continue to process deposits and withdrawals until the close of business
on December 1, 2000, any direct deposits received after December 1, 2000
will be returned, and automatic withdrawals will not be processed after
December 1. Therefore, if you are using X.com and FWNB for direct deposit
or automatic payments, you should take steps in advance of that date to
establish new arrangements."

Please ignore the bottom statement about the $100 giveaway - that is not related to the x.com email and it was entered by mistake. Thanks!

I got one for 2¢ and knowing x.com's track record figured it would bounce so I have left it hanging on the fridge. It is my daily reminder of stupidly getting hooked up with their dumb bank!

(Since I know someone will ask you can make the cent sign by holding down your ALT key and while doing so type in the numbers 0162)

thanks for all the thoughts on this. i have come to the conclusion it must be from my x.com account. they charged me the 12.00 low balance fee in november (which i thought would be charged in december for november's balance). anyway i was 2.00 short with that charge coming out and they bounced 2 checks on me (well they paid them but charged me bounced check charges). now with the refund of this 12.00 wouldnt you think they would drop the bounced check charges since they never should have taken the 12.00 out if they were just going to send it back?

thanks again for your thoughts
