My computer system has been really sluggish here lately. I checked my system performance and I am only running at 63%. I have a 6.00 GB hard drive with only 1.34 of it in use. I have ran a defrag and a scan disk and cleaned up all the temp internet files. The only things I have running right now are 2 windows and Outlook Express. What can I check to see what the problem might be?

Edited to add: In my system tray I am running AIM, a Virus Program, and that is about it. Also, I recently downloaded webshots after taking it out. When I run screensaver and get back on there is always an extra button down at the bottom that does not have anything in it, what is the deal with that?

Hit 'control alt delete' and see how many programs are running that you are unaware of.

You can have many programs running in the background, and starting up on Startup that won't necessarily show in your task bar.

You can see that list by doing the Ctrl-Alt-Delete, or if you are using Win98, go to Start Run, and type in MSCONFIG.

That will bring up the list of programs that is placing something in your startup. You can select "Selective Startup", and use the last tab to uncheck programs you don't wish to have start automatically.

You should be able to get your system to start with at least 85%, if not more. I think we manage 90%. Everytime you load a new program, it wants to throw something in your startup, and most of those are unecessary.

We start our Virus program, some Dislplay programs, Direct CD for our writable cd rom, and task scheduler.

If its been some time since you rebooted your computer there are some programs that you run that after you close them dont give back the mem they used to run running and closeing programs very often can fragment the RAM and slow your computer the only way to derfrag RAM is to shut down your computer and reboot not just restart.

Virus scanners can eat up lot of your MEM since they run from the time your computer starts to bootup and they scan off and online every file in programs you start.

Also next time you reboot your computer watch all the stuff that scrolls by on boot up if all your ram is not working if part of you ram is no good a notice will flash by showwing you some notice that the computer is formateing Ram around bad areas it might even give the amount of bad ram just like when you do a disk scan.

I had a computer that started haveing this trouble and it drove me nuts couldnt figure it out it turned out the computer wasnt running 100% because I used a program called clean sweep and I accidently turned off the programs Protection and deleled the Atapi driver which from as I am told mainly controled the CD Rom but caused my computer to use windows drivers and my computer would only run at 75%
