I thought they had a hot backup system that took over when they had trouble. Must of spent that money for ADs or bonus's, or who knows what. I guess so much for that feature.

The mirror broke, according to Randy Pursglove, eBay spokesperson.

eBay seems to have the most unredundant redundant system on the net.

(AP) -- Sales of Beanie Babies and Pez dispensers on eBay are at a standstill as the online auction service has been off-line for hours.
EBay's Web site went down at 11:34 A.M. and is still unavailable.
Company spokesman Kevin Pursglove says the parallel systems that operate eBay's auction
service both went down.
The cause is unknown but Pursglove says the service had not been hacked or interfered with by an outside intruder.
EBay suffered big outages in June and August of 1999. Those outages led the company to
develop the parallel system as a form of backup to keep the company running through minor glitches. 1.03.01, 3:40p

Remember they do have that hot backup. It's called Yahoo! Unfortunately it will only be good for another week. Luckily I was "vacationing" the past few weeks and wasn't really affected.

Well... 'bout the time eBay starts gettin' too big for it's britches, somethin' like this always happens.
Nothin' like a big huge OUTAGE to get the corporate shirts at eBay to sit up and take note of the fact that until they can guarantee service 24/7, they shouldn't be meddling in OUR businesses regarding whether or not buyers and sellers ultimately complete a trade on their "venue".
When we lose sales due to outages or the Watch This Auction 'feature' because folks either can't bid or they forget to bid, eBay doesn't seem to care... as long as we RELIST rather than negotiate a legitimate deal outside of eBays format.
Now they're gonna get slammed for their new clarification regarding their Spam policy and Off Site trades, even though they will extend many auctions by 24 hours and give credits to all auctions effected by the long outage.
Ya know they're going to lose a lot of money because of this outage. As a user of the site (long time seller), It's hard to feel sorry for eBay when the shoe is on the other foot. *sigh*

....and then there is the 10 day window for Saturday the 13th that is rapidly closing. Is that a crash I here? First a bomb from Yahoo and then a crash from ebay.

That backup system is a figment of ebaYs imagination. Spaz was absolutely accurate! A backup that goes down everytime the main system goes down is no backup at all!!!! -Rosalinda

What concerns me is that Pursglove related that the problem was with the database.
"....eBay immediately switched over to its backup system at the beginning of the first outage Wednesday, company spokesman Kevin Pursglove said. But the problem that affected its main system also affected eBay's backup system, he said.
The first outage was caused by a hardware-related problem, Pursglove said. The second outage occurred while eBay was attempting to bring up its auction system after the first downtime and appears to be related to the company's auction database, he said. Pursglove declined to give any more specifics on the causes of the outages, saying that the company plans to investigate the root causes of the outages after the system is back up and running.
Pursglove said he had no estimate on when that would be, saying only that eBay was trying to restore its auction system "as soon as possible."
I wish he had been more specific about which database. I hope he didn't mean the auction database. As eBay has stated many times there is no backup of the auction database.
