1. To re-format a floppy that is full of pictures do I have to delete them first ?

2. What settings do I use to get an extreme closeup for something such as a gemstone ring. I thought the 73 had a macro lens, I can't get the picture crystal clear. Is there a macro lens & if so how do I find it ?

3. Once the pictures are uploaded at AW can I erase the floppy ?

4. All I know about this camera I learned right here & can't tell you how much I appreciate the help.

Based on my FD83, which is very similar:

1. YOu don't have to delete the pics. Just format the disc. Just go to fileisc tool: format and push the button.

2. On mine, there is a button on the on screen display called "Macro" that is just to the left of the file button. Push it, and you're ready for closeups.

3. Up to you whether you wanna keep your pics on floppies, or on your hard drive. I keep all of mine stored on my hard drive in case I need to use them again. You should probably keep them in one place or another if you might ever need them.

NO. Just stick the floppy in your computer and do a FULL format in the computer's floppy drive (not a quick one). The Mavica's "format" command as suggested by magazine_guy is really just "erase all", and after several uses a diskette will get flakey. A full format in a real computer is what you need to do every couple of times.

2. What settings do I use to get an extreme closeup for something such as a gemstone ring. I thought the 72 had a macro lens, I can't get the picture crystal clear.

There should be a MACRO setting in the menu ... ALso, are you using a tripod or other means of holding the camera TOTALLY still? Hand tremor is a major source of image blur.

Even then, you may need to do some image editing to get the details you want.

3. Once the pictures are uploaded at AW can I erase the floppy ?

Do you trust AW to never have a problem that would require you to upload again?

I save images on my hard drive until AFTER the auction is over, and delete if I don't plan to use the image again.

top-dog ...
No I can't. I have the FD83, and it's visible on the menu as soon as I open it.

Read the manual.

topdog12, the Mavica 73 has an automatic macro capability and so doesn't have a separate macro setting. For more info on your camera's specs go here:

Here is a site with lots of helpful links for digital camera users:

Blanche

BTW, you should format the disk in your computer instead of the camera because formatting uses up the battery charge quickly.

Ok ~ Got out the trouble shooting guide ~ when all else fails read the distructions......I did not find the feature you guys are talking about either. What I did find is if you press the "program" button until you select the Panfocus mode ~ icon is a man and a up arrow ~ it is designed for "recording close or distant subjects quickly and simply". I have never tried this, but please do let me know if it works. I have the book, so let me know if you want me to look anything else up.

I bought the heavy duty battery for my camera ~ and it lasts a long time.......and I have the battery it came with to use white the heavy duty one charges. I format the disks in the camera myself ~ mainly because I don't think about it until I put it back in the camera and it is full. The heavy duty battery is well worth the money. I took over 700 pictures at Disney World on this one battery ~ and Sony claims it will take up to 2000 pictures without using the flash.....

Topdog: I also have the mavica 73, I use it exclusivly for ebay pictures, I take all of my pictures in the "E-mail mode" and I get crisp clear pictures, I also have no problem getting close-up shots, I have taken pictures of markings on small jewlery items that are barely visible to the naked eye and they come out great. I also erase my disks after uploading to auction watch and use the disks over and over. I hope this helps.

Same for Mavica 71. No macro button. The camera (manual) focuses in for close-ups with no problem. We use ours to shoot a lot of coins and other small items.

Try this with your FD-73: Make sure the zoom setting is at its W limit. Hold a $1 bill flat across the lens, preferably with the portrait or seal centered over the lens. Point the camera toward a bright light source and observe the perfectly sharp focus. This kind of painless picture taking is far better than anything that could be done with my old Nikon FM-2, 55mm Micro-Nikkor and a ring light. And there's no waiting to find out if the shot was good or bad.

Most people won't remember how to load 35mm film 5 years from now.

They'll probably think a 35mm is a hand gun...
