I JUST got back from the auction house in town and I bought almost 4,000 cards of Magic The Gathering cards. I don't know anything about them, but the price was right. Where can I learn a little about them to know if one is rare or if I should sell as a lot of 4,000?

Thanks!

I have both played and sold magic cards.

Few words of caution: You get a lot of kids bidding on them who in turn end up as deadbeats which is why I stopped.

Some cards are extremely rare and alot depends on the version of the card.

I don't have the link anymore but you can search for a site use magic gathering card list as search words. There is a site that lists all cards and an idea of value.

There are either copyright dates or symbols that tell you what version the card is depending on what card you are looking at.

Thanks for the warning. I hope I don't get a deadbeat on these!

I think I'm just going to go with the truth -- put them all together as a lot and say I know nothing about them. I deal in a lot of sports cards, so I know what to expect in cards, but think I'm just going to list as about 3200 cards and say I bought at an estate sale. (They did auction them as baseball cards, which I know!) They were in the 800 ct. boxes so I couldn't really see what I was buying and just bid low in case it was nothing good. Looks like I got a great deal!

jenndiggy1: Here are a couple of sites for more information on Magic the Gathering.

The official site (producers of MtG)

http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Welcome.asp

Here is an online price guide

http://www.hhhh.org/cloister/pricelists/

and if you want more information then you could possible use

http://www.swiss-magic.ch/resource.html

If you would like hardcopy information, find a copy of "SCRYE" magizine. This is the price guide that is used by many card shops.

Value of the cards runs from $.05 to $200.00. Value is based on condition and set.

My husband and I have been trying to figure out how to get rid of all of his MTG cards.

He has almost 10,000 cards, which do not include the ones in different languages.

We used a (free!) computer program called "Magic Suitcase" that you can enter how many of what you have, specifying the type, color, author, and the current value for the card. It's pretty neat and helps to organize what you have. There's a note field that we used to specify which box the card is kept in.

Eventually, we'll get around to selling them, but DH knows more about them than I do, so I need him to put together the sets to sell. He hasn't used them in over 3 years, but he's still relucant to part with them.

what I would do in your shoes is this: go to ebay & do a search on completed MTG cards, ordering them by bid price, descending. Then see which single cards have the highest bids. If you have any of those, pull them out to list singly, and do the rest as a large lots or several smaller lots. You will have a bit more work that way, but you will make more money- enough to make it worthwhile I'm sure if there are $20 singles in there. congrats on your great find!

Thanks for all the great ideas. I had never thought about looking to see what single cards go high. This has been a fun find. I know I'll make many times my investment in the cards. I'm wanting fast turn around time on this (just because I am trying to re-organzine my ebay area and would like as few big things around as possible. I had an avalance the other night and it was NOT a pretty sight!) Anyway, I'm hoping to look at these after church, determine what high priced cards I have and then sit back and enjoy the auction.
