I had to change email address to my new computer with a new server. I did not know I would get the shades. I did keep all my feedback but will the shades hurt people trusting me? It makes me kind of mad because I worked hard to earn all of the positives I have. What do you think?

Yes, the shades will hurt ~ but they will be gone in 30 days. Some people won't bid with you, others will think about it and still bid, and others don't even know what they mean ~ such as someone new to ebay who has them too. Same thing happened to a friend of mine she went from selling 70% down to 30% ~ hate to tell you ~ but it is going to hurt you.

I think a lot of people think that sellers with shades are hiding something, or running away from a bad reputation. But if I see something I really want, and the seller has shades, I take the chance.

Shades don't bother me if the feedback is open. Private feedback and I move on. Perhaps you could add a brief explanation with your TOS.

The question is why does Ebay persist in using the shades, knowing that it slows some
bidding during the period that they are used.

Hello Dialin,
I don't believe the shades will hurt appreciably if you are selling quality stuff.
If you have a decent feedback rating and no negs or neutrals in the past few months I would certainly bid on your auctions. The shades mean very little to me as an eBayer who has been around for a while.
Who really knows what folks who only registered yesterday think when they see the shades. If these folks avoid bidding because they think the shades are a reflection on your reputation, then you might be better off as they understand so little about eBay at this point.

Fortunately, that was not my experience. I used to have my email address as my seller name, and it always bugged me, so in November I dropped the "@aol.com" from my name. I had the shades (and couldn't wait for them to be gone)but it didn't hurt busines at all. If people get suspicious, they can always check your feedback and see that you don't have any negs.

Hello Helen,
I think part of the problem is that the shades are made to serve several purposes.
I believe the shades should only indicate that the user has changed their userid. If someone does not use a userid and changes their email address I don't think the shades are appropriate.
And for newly registered users I think an entirely different icon (or no icon at all) should be used.

I just think if you are changing your email address there should be something other than shades to show that all you did..was change your email address. What would it hurt to have 2 seperate things? The shades are usually associated with someone who has something to hide...I mean they are shades..

Dialin,
Why not go to eBay's threaded boards and introduce this topic there?
Or send an email to eBay suggesting that they alter the way they currently do things?

If you don't use your email address as your userid then you can change your email address without getting shades. I've changed my email address a couple of times so that I could redirect my eBay related email to other accounts. I did this because I started receiving too much SPAM email. Now I have a separate email address which I use just for eBay and AW. If I start getting SPAM I have a real good idea where the author of the SPAM got my address...

You only get the shades if you change your userid - if your userid is your email address, you get shades. If your userid is a nickname and you change your email address, you don't get shades.

I think "pugged" has the right idea. Put a brief explanation in your auction TOS.
When I first started bidding on ebay, a year ago, the shades scared me--but honestly they didn't stop me from bidding on something I really wanted!
Now that I'm a seller, I've had one "shades" bidder and just treated him like any other, although I made sure to hold his check for a full two weeks. In retrospect, I should have told him why I held it that long and will do so in the future.
And I totally agree that ebay should have two different symbols for the changes.

I just recently looked at an auction where the seller changed his ISP, He wrote that in his description info, before giving shipping details. gave his previous name with feedback amount and welcomed anyone to check it. Wish I could remember who it was for you. sorry.
