In the February issue of Country Living, there's a little notice:

"Starting this month, Country Living and eBay are joining forces to bring Country icons off our pages and into your homes through the Country Living Auction. From January 16 through February 12, you can bid on Depression glass--including the pitcher shown on the previous page [page 29] offered by specially selected dealers. To learn more, visit www.ebay.com/countryliving."

More competition for the little seller, or a good thing? (I'm conflicted about it myself.)

I think this is not a good thing for the small time seller. But this is what eBay is doing now and this is just one more drop in the bucket.

The small time sellers are just becoming bait for the bigger fish eBay is trying to attract.

How can it possibly be an economical way to get customers unless they are reproductions so that they have a lot of pieces to offer?

My observation is that the supply of depression glass is plentiful, both vintage and reproduction. The market is kind of weak, and I'm sure they do have a lot of pieces to offer. Can Country Living Magazine bring an entire category back to life? I don't know but it'll be interesting to see.

I am a small part-time seller too, but this type of competition doesn't worry me. If anything, it can only bring new blood to eBay or keep the old blood coming back. I think my auctions will compare just fine next to the pros. After all, it's the bidders who ultimately decide.

I would look on it as ads in Country Living Magazine for eBay. If it brings in new bidders, that is a good thing.

AND it seems to me like they would be people who would want older, unique items for their country style of decorating - it could be really good for some parts of eBay.

Our shop rents lots of stuff to Meredith Publishing that puts out several magazines. I don't know if Country Living is one of them or not.

I do know that Meredith rents lots of merchandise and also buys lots of merchandise. Their prop room gets stuffed full and they continue to purchase and rent more stuff for their photo shoots.

They have to get rid of the stuff somehow.
