Here's a question that's been puzzling me. I have come across lots of animated gifs on the Net, some of them on sites that advertise 'get your free animations here.' I right-click on them and choose save-picture-as and the only choice I get is BMP. Of course a BMP is not animated. What am I missing?

What you're missing is a problem with MSIE. You can try to save it as a .gif, and it will, but it's only one frame of the gif. You can try upgrading your version of MSIE to see if that fixes the problem (because I can't think of any advanced settings that will fix that particular problem) ........ or can use Netscape to save the animated gif files .. which it will, without a problem.

If you don't want to switch, you can do it the long way, and do a save as "webpage complete" on the entire page (MSIE 5.x). MSIE will save all the HTML and img files into one of your directories.. and then you can sort through to find the animated gif that you want.

MSIE

Tools>
InternetOptions>
Advanced Tab>
Multimedia>(check off)Play animations.

Click OK to close window to save settings.

Also check your file assocations to make sure you aren't saving everything as a bitmap.

Thanks for all your answers. My question wasn't phrased properly. I have IE 5.0. I can see animated gifs. I can download them from here by clicking save-picture-as and saving as GIF. But there are some sites that have free animated gifs, yet when I right click the only choice I get is BMP. Yet these sites are giving away their gifs and the instructions say to save picture as GIF. So why don't I get this choice? I do get it on other sites.

Here is one example [url]http://www.fg-a.com/aliens1.htm{/url]. This is a free gif the site is giving away but all I can get is a BMP.

I went to the site and right clicked on the waving alien. I selected save picture.

Then a small window appeared with a drop down box on the last line "Save As Type",
my choices were bitmap or gif. I selected gif.

Could this be the problem?

My problem is that the only choice I get is BMP. I do get the GIF choice on some sites and I dont get it on others. I wish someone could explain why.
