Sent a package via USPS Airmail Parcel Post to the Netherlands on 12/26/00 with the blue insurance label. Received an email from the buyer tonight saying that it still hasn't arrived, and the tracking number from the insurance label doesn't exist in the USPS system (he's right, it doesn't). I checked another label sent out about 10 days earlier, and it shows only the delivery info. Three questions:
1. How would this package have been routed from Wichita, KS to the Netherlands, i.e. how would the severe weather we had affect the delivery time?
2. Is this an abnormally long transit time for this particular mailing?
3. Is my local PO screwing up by not scanning these packages into the system, or are they not supposed to?

The insurance doesn't get scanned in just out on delivery. I asked that a few months ago at the post office.

in regards to #3
When I insure a package, the postal clerk always scans in the bar code on the blue slip. The number of the slip then shows up on the postal receipt.
This can also be used as a tracking number on the website, it works even though they don't say it does.
However, I was told not all countries have compatable scanners for the delivery.
But when I ship overseas, the insurance number will show up until it exits the country.
My experience anyway....

You might want to find out where your priority and airmail packages get routed for future reference.
Being in Kansas, remember OK and AR had the bad ice storms on CHristmas. Your package could have sat at an airport for days.
A friend in a small town in southeast OK had no mail delivery for a week. None in, none out.

I was told that they will not initiate tracking on Insured #'s until 30 days has passed from the date you mailed it.

I've got a new question....
is there anywhere to see how ZONES are figured out--or do you just have to go on Zip Code to Zip Code.
This is in reference to Bound Printed---that has 8 Zones (though 1,2 & 3 are the same price)---but then so does Priority Mail where it comes into effect after 5 lbs.

zazzie,
Interesting question.
zones might differ depending upon where you live.
Like if I was in NY, California would probably be zone 8.
But if I was in CA, I don't think CA would still be zone 8.
Just thoughts though.

My last package to NL via airmail took 5 weeks.
My last package to AU took 11 weeks.

That makes me feel better. I kind of thought the weather plus the bad holiday rush have probably slowed things down, and that the 4-7 day transit time estimate on the USPS site was rather optimistic. I'll see what my local posties have to say before I email the buyer again tomorrow.

I heard from my bidder again, and the package arrived today. He apologized for writing "14 hours too soon". All's well that ends well!

Sometimes the delay is caused by a backup at Customs in the destination country.

That always make me feel better to say---"It must be YOUR Country's customs slowing it down" but I say it a bit nicer
