Has anyone experienced this? I went to the post office yesterday to mail one of my Discovery Toys catalogs to a friend. It cost me $1.21 first class. Today, I mailed the same catalog in the same envelope with two MORE pieces of paper in it, and it cost me $.79 to mail. How does this make sense? That's a pretty big jump, especially for mailing out catalogs that all way the same. Ugh...USPS.

Hey, I resent that. I'm sorry I mentioned my company name, if that offended you. What if I was shipping Intel CPU's? How about Anchor-Hocking glass? I was just explaining that they were catalogs, so there was no variance in weight. Jeez...like I'm trying to recruit people here? Not very nice avaloncourt.

Then you could have left your catalog name off as well as the URL to get to your business.

A simple statement could have been. I shipped two of the same catalogs on two consecutive days with the only difference being two sheets of paper. The first cost me $1.21 and the second $.79. Does anyone have any idea why the reduction in postage?

Your posting with the name of the company catalog and then the URL to go to which ends in the same name is no different than someone coming in and saying... "Hey! Come look at my auction!" AW doesn't allow direction to specific auctions unless one jumps through hoops. Auctionwatch also does not allow links to be posted where the link is a referral. You named the item and referred them to your site.

You are neither Anchor-Hocking or Intel. You are a person who sells the named item and provided a link to go to for that item.

Well, whatever, that wasn't my intent. I have a link, like many others have a link, to a page I'd like people to visit. I don't think that's against AW's policies, since everyone else seems to do it. I don't want to get into a pissing war with you. I didn't mean anything by saying my company's name, I'm not trying to recruit eBay sellers to my company, and I'm not forcing you to click my link. 'Nuff said.

Jeeeez avalon. That was kinda harsh IMHO. Lots of people put their links in. That was kinda mean, trinch was just asking a question. She's right, no one is forced to go to her link.

If you check the Bargain Hunt area there's always posts being killed by moderators for links which offer the referral some form of compensation. It just seemed to coincidental that the catalog was named and matched the URL.

Please accept my apology. You obviously had no itention of that type.

On your topic... $1.21 and $.79?? These aren't first class rates. The closest would be $.76 and $1.18.

Were they sent other than First Class?

No harm done then. I don't know if I've got the EXACT prices, but I know the receipt said first class today at the $.76 rate...I just checked, but I can't find the other receipt off hand. I wonder what other rate he could have charged me? And do you guys keep your USPS receipts? Are they of any use tax-wise since it's not really an expense since the bidder pays for it? Curious. Thanks.

Hi everyone,

Just want to clear up the sig line issue.

trinchgirl's signature line is a link to her personal webpage and is acceptable in accordance with the CGs. If she had some promotional wording accompanying it like "visit my site" or "buy my stuff at" then we'd be asking her to change it. As it stands, it's OK.

If anyone needs further clarification, please post to the Moderator's Corner and I'll be happy to help .

Your item is too light to be sent under 3rd class so it must have been 1st. Was it the same scale. I had a situation once where I went to ship an airmail package. I got to the window and he placed the box on the scale and then passed me the customs forms. I moved to an unused window to fill out the paperwork.

Another clerk was then available and she placed the box on her scale. I asked if she would put it over on his and read the weight. She did and it was 4oz heavier on his scale than on hers. I'm not sure how often they have to calibrate the scales but that was a big difference and who knows how many people before me were nailed on the heavier weight.

There may have been enough in the paper to push it to the next ounce and then a scale accuracy problem on top of that.

Absolutely.

All money received from a customer is considered "gross income", regardless of whether it is for the item or shipping and handling. Your postal receipts are your expenses, which are deducted from your profit prior to paying tax. Keep them all, you will need them.

PS...If you are throwing away postal receipts, you definately need to go see an accountant. You are throwing away money, and you need someone to explain to you all the other tax related items you should be keeping track of.
