I would really like to have a second ID. One for selling and one for buying. How do I go about doing that?? When I try I just get the message that I'm already registered!

If that doesn't work, use a different credit card, and log in from another ISP, a free one like Juno or something.
I don't know why eBay is making such a big fuss about it. If someone really wants a second ID, it's not that difficult to do.
Not that I'm planning on doing anything deceitful, but why exactly does eBay not want people to have second IDs? Considering it can take a while to build up feedback, most people probably wouldn't want to do that anyways.

I have one and my hubby has one. We list the stuff on his that I wouldn't want kids to find in a search for my name.
After all, I would not want to upset kids. I would like to think I am being responsible.
The other name, however, is much more liberated .....

I have 2 id's for couple of years... One for selling and one for buying. Just get two different e-mail address and 2 CC numbers if needed. I opened two accounts after a seller I bought from way back, blew my flawless positive feedback, after he thought I did not pay for something. The guy never e-mailed me before he left the feedback. As soon I saw it... I went and pulled the canceled check and e-mailed him a scan of it. The mud was really on his face then, but the damage was done. So I decided to create two accounts just so this would not happen again, because a seller thought I didn't pay for something when I actually did. Besides if you sell and buy at the same time. It really helps having 2 e-mail accounts as you can keep your bidding e-mail away from your selling e-mail.
If you use PayPal to accept payments or to pay for things they let your register several e-mail accounts. The problem I have found is when I pay for something I always have to tell my seller that the PayPal money will come from another e-mail account other than my eBay e-mail bidding account. Does someone know how this can be avoided without having to have 2 PayPal accounts? I always log in to PayPal under my seller eBay e-mail account (which is my default e-mail address with PayPal). Would this change if I logged on to PayPal under my bidding ebay e-mail account? Would the payment then arrive to my seller with my bidder e-mail account name on the Electronic PayPal Payment the seller gets?

I have two ids, one for selling, one for buying.
Both ids are registered to my name and address and same credit card.
I don't think eBay has any problem with one user having multiple ids because most users have the ids to keep their competition from figuring out what they are buying.
What eBay is trying to minimize is fraudulent activity like shilling, an activity that can only be performed with multiple ids. However those people generally register the multiple ids to every relative in their family, not their own name. That is the red flag right there.

[ Edited to add that yes, all you need is a second email address which is easy enough, just add another mailbox to your existing email address, usually a free service or at most five dollars a month. ]

***Shill Bidding Prevention on eBay***
This is an update on eBay’s Shill Bidding Prevention efforts.
Shill bidding is the deliberate placing of bids to artificially raise the price of an item. This is a violation of the eBay User Agreement, and could potentially be prosecuted as a criminal act. Shill bidding is wrong because it artificially raises the price of an item and encourages buyers to pay more than the true market price for the item. Since shill bidding involves using a separate User ID, a false impression that another bidder is interested in the item and willing to pay more for it is created. This is unfair and could even be illegal.
We do not tolerate shill bidding and we enforce this policy stringently. In most cases, a member who is confirmed to have shill bid will be suspended for 30 days on the first offense. Subsequent violations will result in an indefinite suspension. We also cooperate fully with any law enforcement inquiry into shill bidding on eBay.
eBay developed the industry's first shill bidding detection tool in early 1999 as a way to analyze bidding patterns over multiple listings. Since then we have also implemented other sophisticated mechanisms. These tools analyze listings and registration data for patterns indicative of shill bidding and allow our Safe Harbor group to detect and act on violations. It is also used in the investigation of reports that are sent to the Safe Harbor by members.
We have also revised Bid History and Bidder Search to allow members to understand bidding patterns more efficiently. This was accomplished by displaying and providing the ability to sort Bidder Search by the seller ID. We believe that this will help in the detection of questionable patterns.
Changes under consideration include enhanced member verification and limits to the number of accounts per member. These will help to reduce anonymity on the site and related concerns like shill bidding. These significant, more impactful changes are carefully being planned to ensure maximum effectiveness with minimal community disruption.
Finally, we will shortly begin randomly auditing member account activity and act on detected violations.
Although shill bidding on eBay occurs in only a small fraction of listings, it is a very important issue as it creates barriers to success for members and eBay. We will continue to invest in systems and resources to address shill bidding and other issues that undermine trust and safety.
I think your answer to whether or not MULTIPLE I.D.s on the site are still o.k. with eBay will be found in the preceding copy of a post to the eBay announcement board on 12/15/2000

I no longer use PayPal, but when I did, I had the same problem. I have two ebaY IDs with separate e-mail addresses, both registered at PayPal. I also had a third e-mail address registered at PayPal, one which I used for an online shop.
My solution was to change my primary e-mail address at the PayPal site prior to sending an invoice or a payment, depending on whether I was the ebay seller or bidder, or if the transaction was from my online shop.
It's a bit cumbersome, and you either have to remember to change it back to your preferred default afterwards and/or to double-check prior to your next PayPal transaction, but it was important to me not to have to explain why a payment from me-the-bidder or an invoice from my online shop was coming from a different address, i.e. my ebaY selling ID's address.
The last time I used PayPal, it was possible to change your primary address (selecting from among your different PayPal-registered addresses) as often as you wanted to do so.
I don't know if it's still possible to do this at the PayPal site, but if it is, maybe it would work for you.

Dottie: I see nothing in that long post that says having more than one ID is against the rules.
Every time this question has been raised on Ebay's boards, the answer has been the same. You can have more than one ID as long as they don't interact with each other. Meaning you can't use them to shill bid and before feedback was transactional you couldn't use them to pad your feedback.

I think that is the portion pertaining to multiple I.D.s - apprently those changes are UNDER CONSIDERATION.... (just wait and see, shall we?)

I for one find it a lot easier to have a seller and a buyer I.D. ! I sure hope that ebay does not take away this feature that we now have. With all the secret super snooping
software that ebay now has and all the companys that they are having help them on shill bidding I see no reason to limit the
ability to have more than one I.D. on ebay.

Dottie, it says "limits to the number of accounts per member. ", not that they're going to ban them.
Shillers usually have plenty of IDs. If you just use one ID to shill, you're going to get caught pretty fast. Regular shillers can have a dozen IDs. I think these are people Ebay is aiming at, not those that have a seperate ID for buying and selling.
