In my job, I read a lot of technology industry publications. The lead story in the January 15, 2001 issue of InternetWeek is about eBay's recent 11-hour outage.
Interesting reading and I'll leave it to you all to comment.

Generaly EBay's outages get some mention in the Financial press but this time I didn't see anything.
Meg even appeared on Wall Street Week on the Friday (01/05)after. It was a special new year show, not the regular weekly show. Lou Rukeyser asked her a pointed question about outages and she dodged the question and didn't mention the big outage just a few days before. For those of you who don't know of the show is on PBS (generally 8:30 Friday), and is PBS's most widely watched show. The host Rukeyser is noted for sticking up for the little guy and asking tough questions. He most likley didn't know about the recent outage since it got no press. Otherwise I'm sure he woud have pressed the point. Had I known she was going to be on I would have emailed him about it in advance.

From the article -
"EBay's 99 percent uptime is in line with other consumer sites, such as Amazon.com and Yahoo, said Daniel Todd, chief technologist at Keynote Systems, which measures Web site uptime and responsiveness."
I wrote to Daniel Todd a few days ago asking how they figure ebaY has a 99 percent uptime. We come up with closer to a 90% average. -Rosalinda

Thank you for posting the link. I think eBay has already made it clear that site stability is not very high on their ToDo list. Still, it's very interesting to see these statements published.

It's the coverups and er, ahem, misstatements, that will doom eBay, and Paypal too.
