Well, I got my OLYMPUS 460Z camera...and now I'm looking for the reader...I have a few questions(I asked sellers but haven't received response from any of the 3 sellers I asked).

1. Can I use ANY reader or just the one from Olympus?
2. I have Windows 95- I noticed the ads say that the readers are for Windows 98+..is there one out there for 95?

Thanks so much!
Carole

We use a SanDisk Image Mate Compact Flash card reader via USB connection on our Win95b system. Most USB connected items will NOT work under Win95 and need Win98 to work correctly. I think we were just lucky, and the planets were in the right alignment the day we installed ours.

I just got a SMART DISK reader because my ImageMate will not work with WinME & SanDisk was no help!

This puppy reads both Compact & Smart Media -- I just open the cards with the free proggy IrFan View! DL's pics in a few sec's & is USB for Win98 & ME. Cost around $50.00.

To answer your question: it's not the camera that's the issue, it's the card type. If your camera uses Compact Flash cards, then ya need a CF reader & visa versa for Smart Media cards -- that's why I like this card reader!

PS: If you DO NOT HAVE USB capability, there is a CF reader available from the Kodak web-site which is PARALLEL PORT with PRINTER PASS-THROUGH (although it is a PITA). Simpler solution, is to upgrade to Win98 - NOT ME! I HATE ME!

I am running a Sndisk card reader with ME and it works just fine. I got the software patch from ZDnet driver downloads. I was using it with 95 before I upgraded, though. Again I got the software driver patch from ZDnet. It just takes a little looking, but you can pretty much find the software necessary to do what you need to do. I have a Kodak 512 zoom and a Sandisk SDDR-Q1. I use the 4 M and the 16 M cards and hove no problems.

Dawn: You're probably right! The ImageMate I had was an older one (?31something without the eject button) and the other reason I got a new card reader was that my new PC has Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.02 and I guess there are some issues between the card reader & EZCD that I just didn't feel like fooling with -- so I gave the IM to my son & got a better reader.

I believe that all Olympus cameras use smartmedia readers, not compact flash. Make sure you get the right format. All readers are basically the same, you dont need an Olympus one. The one I personally recommend is the Zio. It is a small device that you can fit in your pocket and it also comes with a separate USB extender so you dont have to reach around the back of the machine to plug in USB devices. It sells for $35.
