Picked up this little guy at a thrift store the other day. He's soft plastic and squeaks through a hole on the bottom (under his feet.) He looks familiar--like he came from an advertisement for something? Anybody recognize him?

joycel,

You will need to use UBB for the image to show up... oh and the .jpg name is case sensitive. Try this without the $'s

He's reminiscent of Bob's Big Boy Restaurant.

Looks like a Ruth Newton copy. She made cute little rubber dolls with their clothes on - boys, girls and animals. I love these things! Have a very similar one on my toy shelf that is copyrighted 1962.

Try a search on eBay for Ruth Newton and see how yours compares. I believe these are quite collectable. (Could also be an Edward Mobley or Sun Rubber piece. (Ruth Newton is a Sun Rubber brand, but they had others as well.) All the name brand pieces are marked as such, but there were a lot of nice copies made.) A search for 'rubber doll' should pull up some good comparisons.

Thanks for your help! I searched "Ruth Newton" and mine doesn't look like the same style as hers, although I wish he did! Those guys are worth some bucks! Also checked Mobley and Bob's Big Boy and although they're all similar, none seem to fit this little guy. There's no identifying marks on it, and it's a fairly thin rubber. Any other ideas?

Maybe Campbell's (Soup) Kids?

Maybe Morton Salt?
But Campbells sounds right too.

Hello,
Ruth Newton desined particular baby dolls for Sun Rubber like Amousandra and Sunbabe, not the type you have. It would be described as a Sun Rubber type doll make sure to say Unmarked if it's not marked "Sun Rubber". You might look and see similar dolls.

joycel: I think it is probably a Ruth Newton or Edward Mobley copy, as there were many different ones made. Does this doll have any manufacturer's marks on him? That's usually a giveway if its a copy, as most of the copies weren't marked. My doll is an Edward Mobley and it is stamped on the back as such. He is very similar to yours, except that the doll I have has one hand behind his back holding a dangling frog.

Your doll also looks a bit like the Dolly Dingle companion dolls. Grace G. Drayton was the artist who designed the original Dolly Dingle doll that was used by Campbells as their spokesman. Dolly and one of her buddies (Jock perhaps?)came to be known as the Campbell Kids. The dolls did go through a bit of 'development' from their earlier look to the one they now sport, so your doll may be a spin-off. My guess is that this is a late 1950's to mid 1960's piece, as many of the rubber doll of that era had this "look" to them. Whoever he is, he's a cutie!

He does look familiar. I think I met his mom about 7 or 8 years ago at a friend's bachelor party. Let's just say I'm kinda relieved he doesn't have red hair.

Xardon--When I look at him closer, I think he does have a tinge of red in his hair. Do you have a pot belly?
