My UMAX scanner used to produce great scans, but recently they've all been very dark and I've had to lighten each one using image editing software. It works but it's a time-consuming process.
I've had the scanner for a couple of years now and there have been a couple of times when the bulb was left on for long periods of time, so I'm wondering if the bulb is wearing out. It looks as bright as ever to me, but maybe the "naked eye" isn't a good indicator. Has anyone had a similar problem?
Have you had to replace your scanner bulb, or with the relatively low cost of scanners these days is it easier and/or more cost effective to just buy a new one?
My scanner doesn't appear to have a calibration function which would allow me to tell it what brightness scans should be.

~RainyBear~ I have a Umax as well and if you bring up the "Acquire" window, do a "Preview" scan first, then reset your "Shadow" switch to a lighter tone. Try lightening the "Gradient" switch as well. I always reset to default, then do all the re-adjustments.
Umax suggests you leave the scanner on all the time, so I doubt your bulb would be going already.
They're really good scanners, so I hope yours works out!

Thanks kraftdinner -- after a little more exploring, I've found that my scanner really does have controls for brightness, and shadow, and other stuff too!
