Hi...you've been very helpful in the past.
Does anyone have experience with Zone Alarm or programs like that.
What do they do?

Thank you

I love ZoneAlarm! It is a great Firewall program. I would not think of accessing the Internet without it turned on. Here is the URL of the frequently asked questions page. http://www.zonelabs.com/support_za.htm To access the main page for ZoneAlarm, just backspace to eliminate the support_za.htm from the URL. Hope this helps.

I think ZA has a version that stops cookies. But I don't think it is the free version.

I think it is one of the other 2 offered for a fee $$$.

we use zone alarm at home. the best way to filter cookies is via your browser.

Netscape? open it and click on EDIT>PREFERENCES>ADVANCED

MSIE? you don't have to have it open. right click on the blue E on your desktop. select properties. click on securities tab. click on the custom button. scroll down the list until you find your cookie selection.

I had Zone Alarm. I liked it & it did a gret job. The one drawback was that for some reason it kept interfering with shutting down my computer. Made it unable to complete the shut down process.

I got DSL recently and they had to remove ZA in order to make the installation. All my shut down problems disappeared.

i also had to uninstall my ZA for the DSL installation process. when it was all done, i reinstalled ZA. it's worked fine ever since. what kind of windows do you have? have you selected the correct version of ZA?

If you just want cookie options try AddSubtract- it knocks out cookies and banner ads and is free.

Zone Alarm is a great firewall- and thanks to another post I now know why I have shut down problems !!

Just after I installed Zone Alarm, my machine was being pinged over 10 times an hour. I think hackers shares IPA's on cable and DSL users and they all try to enter their machines. After 30 days of using Zone Alarm, no more pings.

paulswife: I have Windows 98. Yes, I had the correct version. I have not reinstalled it (though I am thinking about it)--I am luxuriating in being able to shut down my computer without problems

I use ZA and like it. It alerts me to those ISP's from foreign countries trying to enter...shame on them (Spain) nasty buggers...

i too have win98.

have you tried disabling your power management in your control panel or in your BIOS?

if you're not familiar with the BIOS or setup, but you want to check it, don't play around in there, you can &*#(_@#& things up. just go to power and disable it. save and exit.

you can email me with questions if you'd like.

Yes, you do need to get the newer version of Zone alarm to stop cookies.

We have DSL and its great, I used to have pop up alerts all the time, until I found I could shut off the alerts. They would pop up all the time, now if there is anything, it will show in a log, bring up ZA and it will show how many times you've been 'hit', without the pop up alerts.

I would recommend that anyone who has a computer which is "always online" to install a personal firewall.

My personal computer is connected to the internet as part of a large network on a university campus. Despite the fact the university maintains it's own firewall, I was quite surprised how many unauthorized "queries" my computer receives.

I have trapped port scans from dialup ports, ping attacks and numerous "http" requests despite the fact that I have no servers or daemons running on my computer. All of these "requests" had already passed through the main firewall of the unversity campus.

There are several different firewalls which are free for personal use. I have only used Zone Alarm and have been quite satisfied with it. For those unfamiliar with such products I would recommend starting out with the highest security setting possible for whatever firewall they are using. I believe most users would be surprised just how much traffic there is to and from their computer that they don't know about. After becoming familiar with the operation of the firewall, the user can customize the security settings to match their computer usage.

Black Ice Defender is also an excellent program. Its not free but one you purchase and I switched from Zone Alarm to this one after reading about it in one of the well known computer mags. I use Cookie Pal for my cookie filtering system and like that really well too. JMHO.

We use Zone Alarm and like it a lot! We used to have Black Ice but for some odd reason we had to shut it down when using Napster as it was making it difficult to connect. I am not a computer person so don't know why but with Zone Alarm we have no problems!

We always leave our computer on 24/7. The other day I re-booted it up because it was running sluggish. When it restarted, the Zone Alarm wouldn't come up and my computer froze so I had to re-start it again at which time it came up fine. Not sure if it would be considered a shutting down problem.
